I’m looking forward to reading about this trip. I’ve been wanting to go to Costa Rica for a few years. I still have to finish reading your other tour tale though. Every time I start it, I get interrupted.

Enjoy India, Bet. I'm very interested in hearing about that one! I got my docs today. Only four of us on the tour - all women.

Their Costa Rica tours are usually full. I think the only reason there are no men is because it's the holiday season. In 24 tours, I can count on on hand how many solo men there were...so the odds were against any being on the tour in the first place....and couples are home celebrating the holidays. The four of us are likely escaping the holidays! LOL

There were 5 solo men and 0 solo women on my Treasure's of the Balkans tour last year, I was 1 of 3 solo on another tour.

LOL...that's pretty good. I've had one solo man on my South Africa, Bohemian Highlights, Vietnam and Panama. (I don't count 2 solo men travelling together)

(I don't count 2 solo men travelling together) I'm fairly sure I've 1 solo male on all my other trips except Egypt. If you did count 2 solos travelling together you would have to add at least 2 more to all my tours, my father and I (except the 1 tour where I travelled solo).

Chech, is this tour a Trafalgar tour? If not, what company are you going with?
I’ve been on many tours that have had a few solo men, although there are usually more single women. My second tour of Italy had five solo men. That’s the most I’ve seen on any one tour.

It's an Eldertreks tour....adventure travel for people over 50 (but not crazy adventure). Max of 16. In Cuba...there were no adventure elements (except being in regular Cuba instead of Resort Cuba). In Costa Rica, the adventure elements include rafting, horseback riding, ziplining, a hike etc. They do make allowances for people who don't want to do an activity. They're not optionals...they're part of the itinerary. I've never had a tour with more than one solo male travelling on his own. I would have been surprised (and tickled pink) to have five solo men on a tour. The solo male on my South Africa tour used to hang with one of the husbands so much, I didn't know he was a solo till later. Turns out he thought it reflected badly on him if we thought he was solo. We just shrugged and said it says nothing about him except he likes to travel.

This sounds like a great tour. I can’t wait to read about it. It’s one I’d be interested in doing one day.
On my Italy tour, there was a group of about 20 people from Australia. They were all together with their travel agents, who were a husband/wife team. The travel agents organized this trip, and got a huge discount because they were such a big group. These people didn’t know each other before the trip though, and only met when they were about to leave for the trip. The five solo men were with this group, and two of them shared a room., while the other three paid the single supplement.

That's an interesting way to go. Good if there were nervous travellers going for the first time...to have your own chaperone all the way.

My family lives in a small town in Northern Ontario, and there’s a travel agent there who organizes a group trip every year. My aunt and uncle went on the Mediterranean cruise that she organized, and my friend’s parents went on the Australian cruise. Even though these people are not technically travelling together, because the agent books them as a large group, they get a group discount. Apparently these trips book up fast, and, the travel agent goes with them.

Half packed! And for some reason, I seem to have more room in my luggage than I used to.

One week to go....and today I took advantage of a sale at Eldertreks and saved over $3000 off three tours. Tibet and Nepal (includes a night at Everest base camp) - Oct 2017 South America (Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia and Chile including five days at the Atacama Desert) - Mar/Apr 2018 Kenya and Tanzania - Nov 2018

Chech: All your upcoming 5 tours sound amazing. Oh to be young again and be able to plan that far in advance. With Costa Rica and the storm tracker trips in the near future and now with 3 additional tours later on you must be very excited. Purvis

Well, I left St. John's on Monday evening to beat the storm. Funny part is that my original flight had no problem getting out on Tuesday...but I would have had a problem getting to the airport, so it worked out. Spent yesterday at the Square One Mall (bus goes there from Pearson). Nice mall with other stores nearby like Chapters and a Cineplex theatre. I went to see Allied to kill a few hours. Today I checked out Westwood and Woodbine malls. Not nearly as nice. Now I'm in Pearson and I finally...finally!...got into the international Maple Leaf Lounge. I booked a Rouge business seat cause it was cheaper than economy (go figure)...and even though the Costa Rica legs are Rouge and my legs to TO from St. John's are not, I still get seated in business for those legs. Not too shabby. Trying not to get too spoiled.

Well, I had the funniest introduction to a guide last night. My flight took a while to get a gate and despite being the first off the plane, my luggage was at the bottom...he was so worried that he might have missed me, he even checked with the hotel to see if I had taken a taxi. When I picked up my luggage finally and walked out to a huge crowd and dozens of signs, I was looking and looking and then I heard someone call out my name. He was holding the Eldertreks sign and waved me over. I asked him how on earth he knew it was me and he said he knows his market.
