The first leg of my flights to Spain was scheduled to depart my local airport (in Ontario, California, USA) at 8:30 AM.
At 5:30 AM, the airline called me and said the inbound flight was late so I wasn't going to make my connecting flight in Dallas Texas. They said that, if I could arrive at Ontario by 7 AM, they'd taxi me to John Wayne Airport in Orange County (about 50 miles from Ontario).
At 5:45 AM, the airline called me AGAIN and said that they had a "better option": if I could arrive at Ontario by 7 AM, they'd taxi me to Los Angeles International Airport (about 60 miles from Ontario)
At 6:45 AM, I arrived at Ontario and the airline said they have an "even better option": they were taxiing me to Burbank Airport (about 55 miles from Ontario).
I arrived at Burbank Airport about 8 AM and I landed in Madrid two hours earlier than my original flight schedule.
====================
At the end of my Spain tour, my flight was scheduled to leave Madrid at 10 AM. Because of the lateness of my flight, the 50-seat coach from the Madrid hotel to the airport contained only the driver, the tour director and me.

All of the flights to and from Spain were on American Airlines.

Well, I am impressed with AA, good job of trying every option possible to get you to Madrid! AA has never been my favorite airlines, but I see that they really tried to accommodate you, I'll be flying AA to Madrid from LAX, continuing to Lisbon, I hope I don't have this problem just because I am not good at handling stress, but if I do I will remember how hard they tried in your case. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your vacation.
