Since I don't type up the travel tale as I go now, I'm finding I don't need to take my Surface with me and since I'm about to upgrade to the new Pro 4, I don't want to take that with me since it's going to become my primary unit. So, what do you find is the best non-Apple tablet for travelling? I'm looking for a unit that has a way to take photos off my camera (via a cable so a USB port would probably be a necessity). One that is easy to type on, that is good to watch movies on and surf the web. And is not an Apple. LOL Suggestions?

I really like my Dell laptop, so this might be a choice for you: www.cnet.com/products/dell-venue-8-7000/

I have sony tablet. I had to purchase an extra usb cord as it only has a mini slot but with that transferring pics was a breeze. I also have Kindle on it plus my favourite games. I love it but the style I see has changed now so I don't know how the new one would perform. Should be better given this will be 6 years old this xmas. I bought a wifi only one as I didn't want any extra charges from a telco .

Cool. So I guess the basic tablet will do what I want if I can get a female USB that plugs into the mini usb port on the tablet. Then I can connect a memory stick or my cameras to it. As soon as I'm wide awake...hopefully by Monday...I'll go into Staples and have a look at what is there.

Orrr......I use a micro SD card with adapter in my phone and it looks like most tablets would let me plug that in to download the photos off the card....correct?

When I first got my Sony I swapped the camera card and put it into tablet with adapter but I found that system a bit fiddly, hence the usb cord adapter. I can then transfer files from both camera and phone, now that I have one that takes very good pics.

I'd definitely experiment with both ways. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is looking attractive...it even has a keyboard I can get for it.

I've seen people who blog their travel on a mobile phone (a Galaxy?) as shown here: europetrekking.wordpress.com/about/

LOL...I have a Galaxy but never knew about a keyboard attachment. I'll have to have a talk with the guys at Staples and see what's possible!
