Interesting article! I had one pilot explain that turbulence was like potholes in the sky. Over the midwest US once, they were like craters. And another pilot encouraged seat belt use by reminding us that the plane is going 800 kph. Granted any sudden stop would make seat belt use moot. I never take mine off when I'm seated. I was on a flight that dropped in severe turbulence over Montreal and it was enough make your arms float up type of feeling....and some of the overhead bins opened up and spilled their contents. Luckily this was before the time of hard sided carryons with wheels and handles so no one was hurt. And my brother was on a US airline back when people would stand up and get their stuff before the plane had come to a complete stop. The only thing was that on this flight, the brakes malfunctioned and the plane missed the gate and hit the terminal. My brother said it was like watching missiles go by. There were several broken bones.  |

Chech: standing up before the plane comes to a complete stop is like leaving a car while it is still moving only an idiot would do either and if they received broken bones then they and they only are to blame not the airline. Purvis |

They're definitely to blame. This was in the 70s or 80s when the airlines were not as militant about making everyone stay seated until the plane comes a complete halt. I'm guessing it took a few broken bones to make them strictly impose the rule. The funny thing is that I went a few years without flying commercial. Then when I took that first flight years later I was surprised when no one stood up for their carry-ons right after landing. Granted, knowing how lawsuits go in the US, I have to wonder if some of them tried to sue....kind of like suing a hairdryer company cause you tried to use your hair dryer while asleep and set your bed on fire. Yeah. That's why there's a warning on hair dryers telling you not to use them while sleeping.  |
