1 ~~~ Pride in the UK: The best celebrations across the country This is where to support and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community this summer, wherever you are in the UK On Saturday 1 July 1972, just five years after the Sexual Offences Act decriminalised male homosexuality, the streets of London erupted as the UK's first large-scale pride march took place. The date was significant, marking three years since the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in New York, which saw LGBTQ+ patrons targeted by the city's police department. In the 50+ years since, new laws and a gradual shift from society's once-heteronormative ideals have made many societies much safer for the community. However, this isn't the case everywhere, and the pride events in the UK that take place each summer, from London to Manchester and beyond into several bustling Scottish cities, are a celebration of where we are as a nation and a reflection on LGBTQ+ individuals who still feel unsafe as a result of their sexual orientation. Party with superstar acts, immerse yourself in a new city and raise a toast to those who fought the way to where we are today at these Pride celebrations nationwide. www.cntraveller.com/article/pride-in-the-uk#13 June 2024
