What is it about Finland that makes these people the smiliest around?
One traveller tried to get to the bottom of it on a pursuit of happiness
Semi-submerged up to my bare shoulders in a 4.1°C Baltic sea – snow falling on the bit of me above water – might not be the traditional place to start a piece about happiness, but, for Finland, it makes a lot of sense.
They embrace the harsh and turn it to their advantage, are in touch with nature, and display a level of contentment which stems from the assurance that whatever life throws at you (in this case near-hypothermia), there’s always a support network to give you a soft landing (in this case a smoke sauna and a beer).
