1 ~~~ 9 of the best hikes in the Lake District From wholesome rambles for beginners to routes sure to get you way past your step count goal Even the most dedicated couch potato will want to lace on their shoes when faced with the stupendous beauty of the Lake District – it’s a landscape that lends itself perfectly to walking, hiking and scrambling, with rewarding views at every turn. It also features endless variety, with over 214 fells (hills) to explore, and close to 200 tarns (mountain lakes), which can be admired from on high, or via paths around their shores. With geological beginnings in the Ice Age, the Lake District is an example of glacial activity. Inevitably, its beautiful and diverse setting makes it as attractive to wildlife as to humans, thus providing much in the way of ‘spotting.’ For the romantics among us, there’s also the fact that numerous poets and wordsmiths have been inspired by this setting – William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, to name but two. Walking this landscape is just one way to bring you closer to their works. It’s also, of course, highly Instagrammable. www.cntraveller.com/article/best-hikes-in-the-lake-district?20 March 2024
