The founding of Yellowstone National Park in 1872 as a public park "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people" helped launch a worldwide national park movement—by 1916, our National Parks Service was established (thank you, Woodrow Wilson) to protect 35 national parks and monuments. More than a hundred years later, they remain one of our most treasured natural assets. While the now-69 national parks and monuments are temporarily closed, they're not out of mind. In collecting these vintage photographs of the parks from decades past, not much as changed (save for how close you can get to bears): they're still as grand, majestic, and impressive as ever. And we can't wait to go back.
