Unsurprisingly, with summer 2020 becoming a season of more UK breaks than ever before, interest in camping – and its smarter sibling, glamping – has surged. The great outdoors, away from the crowds… the thought of unzipping canvas in the morning and rolling out into the fresh country air, gathering farm eggs for breakfast, star-gazing at night. And the UK is well provided for, with pitch-your-own campsites and smartly crafted glamping spaces sprouting like mushrooms after a rainfall over the past decade.
Many farm and campsite owners have looked at ways of ensuring their fields are safe and not overcrowded without losing the essence of the experience. Many opened for business once again on 4 July 2020. And some may stay open later into autumn than usual. Taking your own tent, of course, means being in control of your own precautions, but others will prefer the lighter load of pre-pitched tents and cabins.

The Lake District is the English landscape at its most epic: it claims its highest peaks and its deepest lakes, it has moved the pens of great poets and the brushes of Old Masters, it has bequeathed us cultural treasures as diverse as Swallows and Amazons, Kendal Mint Cake and all the best scenes in Withnail and I. It has some of the best walks in the UK too, with trails to suit every kind of rambler – from humble hikers looking to stretch their legs near the car park, to brave souls conquering England's loftiest peaks via frightening scrambles. With the tough terrain and rapidly changing weather inbound from the Irish Sea, it's vital to come well prepared: you'll need proper walking boots and a waterproof shell – especially on heavyweight mountains such as Blencathra, Helvellyn and the ever-popular Scafell Pike.

A large part of my childhood was spent in the English Lakes, with never a mention of abroad. Other Manchester families went to Europe and even the USA, but to us travel was something that started at junction 19 of the M6 and ended 80 minutes later in Ullswater. Strangely, it never got boring. The Peak District was the UK's original national park, a precious pocket of greenery at the heart of England. Though you might not guess it, its craggy valleys and wind-tousled moors are surrounded by some of Britain's biggest cities: the suburbs of Manchester and Sheffield stretch almost to its boundaries, and Leeds, Derby and Stoke-on-Trent aren't far away either. On summer weekends, city folk flock in droves to breathe fresh Pennine air. But with a pair of boots and a map, you might just claim a corner of the Peak for yourself: among villages that stirred Charlotte Brontë’s pen, views that summoned Lord Byron's muse, and summits where British hiking history was made. The Peak District is perfect for first-time hillwalkers – the slightly more challenging terrain lies in the so-called ‘Dark Peak’, mostly north of Edale, with the ‘White Peak’ of the south making for easier rambling.
