1 ~~~ Hudson: The trendiest town in New York State ~ Conde Nast ~~~ 183 The Brooklyn Effect is rippling upstate and giving some attitude to the small town of Hudson, a nice-as-pie, riverside whistle stop in New York State with a buzzing foodie scene, beautiful boutique hotels and down-home hipster hangouts
I've just been told that the cheeseburger I ordered is Animal Welfare Approved. Really? Whatever next? A Greenpeace-approved nuclear submarine? I'm in a diner called Grazin' in Hudson, a small town on the river of the same name in Upstate New York. From my banquette seat I look out across Warren Street, the main drag, a gently sloping mile's worth of splendid, faded old buildings, mostly from the 18th and 19th century. Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Egyptian Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Beaux-Arts, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Arts and Crafts - you name it, they're all here. Nice street, I'm thinking.
Opposite the diner a sign hangs in a window: SLEEPING CAT THEATRE! SHOWS DAILY! Two moggies slumber behind the glass, oblivious to passers-by. Nice kitties. A young man wearing a miniskirt sashays past in one direction, an elderly lady with a sulphur-crested cockatoo on her shoulder in the other. Nice skirt. Nice cockatoo. And this burger is sensational. The animal-welfare people are right to approve. I order a second glass of home-made cola to wash it down with, then a third. 'Nice soda,' I remark to the waitress. 'Reason it's so good,' she informs me, 'is there's no corn syrup or artificial flavours or colouring. That shit tricks your brain.' www.cntraveller.com/gallery/hudson-new-york
