I am entirely aware that this does not reflect well on me, but only once in adult life have I ever flown sober. And that 'once' wasn’t on purpose; I didn’t realise a decade ago when I booked myself onto a Kuwait Airways from London to New York that it was an Islamic airline and thus did not permit alcohol. I remember when it dawned on me that I would be spending the next seven hours strapped into that middle seat with no anaesthetic, a sinking dread engulfed me.
