I recently returned from a seven week trip to Africa. I don't know why I waited so long to visit Africa ... it was amazing! I did a 42 day adventure tour on an overland truck. The distances were huge and the roads were dusty and rough but the incredible sights and experiences were worth the uncomfortable ride. This type of tour is not for everyone! Here's a link to my blog - newest entries at the top, scroll down to find the start of the Africa trip. There's a lot of entries (it was a long trip) but there's plenty of photos if you don't want to read my ramblings. misswalker.travellerspoint.com/toc/

Hi Jen,
I have just read the first 10 days of your Africa trip and the tour sounds very tiring. Your photos are fabulous. I'll read the rest of the blog tomorrow. Like you, I also live in Canberra.

Jen,
As it happens, I'm siting at the airport waiting for a flight for my second trip to Africa. I went to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia last year and was completely bewitched.
Your Tour is a little too basic and involves to many long drives (not to mention is way longer than my vacation allows), but them, mine was likely to luxurious for others liking.
i enjoyed reading your blog!

By the way, I spent a day with Greg Hilliard in Cape Town, also. He was fantastic!

Just finished reading your tale Jen. loved the photos, especially the fantastic animal shots! what a great tour I thought. Then, Bushy Bushy, put me off somewhat. The clincher though that decided that this tour was not for me was the spider in the bathroom! I have a bad enough time with spiders at home,,and I know what species they are. African spiders would scare the wits out of me, so I will just have to enjoy the animal pics you shot and not go in person. thank you for putting your blog link here.

Solaria, I’m impressed that you managed to read the whole lot … it’s very long. I don’t like spiders but they weren’t as scary as the spiders in Australia. We also received constant warnings about snakes but I didn’t see any.
Tulips, I hope you are enjoying your second trip to Africa. No luxury tour for me. I planned this as my only trip to Africa – I don’t expect to go back because I still have so many other places that I want to see. So I was looking for a long tour so I could see as much as possible and I also wanted to try something different – an adventure tour. I’m retired so I have no restrictions on the time of year or how long I can travel (except for the cost of course).
Hi Pauline from Canberra (hope the weather warms up soon). Yes, the long days were very tiring and towards the end of the trip I really felt exhausted and longed to stay in bed just a bit longer each morning. But now that I’m home I can really appreciate just how much I saw and what a wonderful experience it was.

Jen what a great tale, I would have loved to do a tour like this when I was 40 years younger, now I like the comforts of a great bed, good food and not so bumpy roads. Also loved your photos.

marielouise, I would have loved to have done this type of travel 40 years ago as well. But 40 years ago I was tied down with a husband and babies. Now that I'm old but still fit enough to travel I feel a great freedom - I've done lots of tours that feel comfortable and safe but now I have the urge to try different types of travel. I'm not sure what I'll do in 2018 but it will probably have more comfortable beds, better food and less bumpy and dusty roads!
