We left for Glasgow May13 and came back May 28. Originally I had hoped to get on Insight's Country Roads of Scotland, which travelled from Edinburgh to Orkney, the highlands, Skye and Glasgow, but they were fully booked. I met a group at the Glasgow airport when we were going home and they said it was a great tour.
We decided to travel to Scotland since we had never been there, when our son in law who works for WestJet airlines told us we had 2 hours to decide if we wanted to take advantage of a Family and friends special, usually these fares are reduced a lot but not for the plus class that we like to use since we are tall and need the extra legroom. The upgrade to plus is very expensive compared to regular seats.
The flights were very comfortable with lots of legroom, we also got food and no fee for luggage. The first leg was Calgary to Halifax, about 5 hours but then we had a wait for more than 5 hours. Halifax airport is very nice and quiet compared to the larger airports. We managed to snooze a little on the next leg to Glasgow which was less than 6 hours. It was a very long day since our first flight left early in the morning.
We took the airport bus, 10 pounds return, for about a 30 min ride to the Queen Street rail station in Glasgow. During the day the train runs every half hour to Edinburgh and the return ticket didn't cost much. You can also take a bus from the Buchanan bus depot, which my daughter did a couple of years ago.
We rented a 1 bedroom apartment in Edinburgh through Stay in Edinburgh, on the Royal Mile. It was a 10 min walk uphill from the station to the check in, then they took our suitcases and we walked a further 10 min uphill to the apartment in James Court. There were 60 circular steps to the flat, it was nice and roomy with a king size bed, small bathroom and a kitchen living room. The location was excellent, another 10 min walk uphill to the castle. It was old but renovated. We had to move after 6 nights to another unit for another 6 nights, it was not as nice but only 25 steps to the flat, also there was only a rope railing, it was over a bar but it became quiet after 11. The other place was very quiet and looked over the courtyard.
Every evening we went for a walk on the Royal Mile, there were always lots of people, DH enjoyed listening to the bagpipes.
