I receive these notifications:
There are new posts.
There are new threads.
You have new forum notifications.
What does each mean?

Just means your notifications are set to send you an email when there is activity on the board.
You can change these by going to your Profile (menu on top) then click on Edit Profile (right side) and click on Notifications. You can turn them on or off to suit your preferences.

("Instant" is ticked for all notifications in my Profile)
What does "There are new posts" mean?
What does "There are new threads" mean?
What does "You have new forum notifications" mean?

Then every time someone makes a post or creates a thread or any other number of forum actions, you will get a notification.
If you don't want them, change the option to Never.

Redundant notifications?
Does "You have new forum notifications" mean someone has posted a reply or posted a new item in the forums? (I also get e-mail notifications saying "There are new posts")

It can mean either. Best to just turn them off or customize them as noted above.

That's correct. Gary should go into his Profile>Notifications and determine whether he wishes to be notified when a number of events occur. You can alter the frequency of these alerts or even set them to never notify. For example, I wouldn't wish to be notified every time a post is made on the forum so I switch that off altogether. But as an administrator, I do like to know when a new member joins as I'm alerted to a potential spammer and I can remove any offending posts and block that person from any further activity.
Browse through the settings, Gary, and decide your preferences.
