12 ~~~ 6 of the best road trips in the UK
There is something about a road trip that creates a state of heightened excitement.
No matter the destination, a road trip unfolds at the same, ascending rhythm. Back roads are followed (whenever possible), motorway service stations are avoided (at all costs) and the countryside flies by with the same tempo as a rock song (cue Status Quo).
If you’ve got wheels – be it a car, bike or camper – here are 6 great road trips in the UK to try.

13 ~~~ Rough Guides ~ British Isles ~ Travel Guide: England
Travel Guide England
No one enjoys knocking England more than the English, but – modesty and self-deprecation aside – it’s a great place to visit or explore, and whether you’re a resident or tourist the country retains a boundless capacity to surprise, charm and excite.
England has always had a history and heritage to be proud of, and a glorious regional diversity – from coast to hills, festivals to foodstuff – with few parallels. But for all the glories of the past, in recent times it’s had an injection of life that makes it as thrilling a destination as any in Europe.

1 4 ~~~ HIGHCLERE IN THE AUTUMN
Please note: Many Photos to view
Thank you to those who joined us on Saturday October 9th or Sunday October 10th for the Highclere Castle Festival. We were extraordinarily lucky with the weather, and even more fortunate to have some brilliant speakers over the course of the weekend. We will be releasing some video clips in due course.
We very much hope you enjoyed “Christmas at Highclere” on Channel 4, and felt that some team Highclere contributed some memorable lines rather in the vogue of Downton Abbey.
We welcome Christmas events from late November until December 21st and we end with a wonderful performance of a Christmas Carol by Gerald Dickens.
We have posted our Wintertime and Springtime tours as well as the general admission tickets for Easter and summer.
If you have booked tickets and would like to reserve a manual wheelchair, please do email theoffice@highclerecastle.co.uk. Pushchairs for babies and toddlers are most useful for the gardens and may be left at the entrance hall whilst you tour the Castle at which point, we would ask you to carry or hold fast to small childrens' hands! Again this year, neither dogs nor picnics are permitted in the gardens (guide dogs excepted). For any further useful information please click here
We hope you will find many different tours to tempt you, and we very much look forward to seeing you. Tickets for all of the above can be found on our ticketing website and, again, we ask that you book in advance of your visit.

15 ~~~ Rough Guides ~ British Isles ~ Travel Guide: Ireland Travel Guide Ireland Over the past three decades, Ireland has transformed itself with quiet determination. Gone - or certainly on its way out - is the image of a conservative, introspective, rural set of nations. The infamous unrest and violence, between the Republic (Éire) and Northern Ireland (as part of the United Kingdom), have faded away. An outward-looking Ireland has stepped forward, energised by cities no longer weighed down by the Troubles. www.roughguides.com/ireland/Updated: 6 June 2021

16 ~~~ Rough Guides ~ British Isles ~ Travel Guide: Scotland Travel Guide Scotland As befits the home of tartan and whisky, Scotland defies simple definition. It’s a spirited, captivating, complex country. An alluring blend of ancient heritage, and wild landscapes that stir the soul and offer outdoor adventures in magical surroundings. And, as all visitors who travel to Scotland discover, it’s a distinctly dynamic and thoroughly modern entity too. www.roughguides.com/scotland/Updated: 22 September 2021
