1 ~~~ CNT ~ Travel Articles ~ 2022 / 2023 ~~~ 103 Egypt’s Must-See Architectural Marvels, Beyond the Pyramids From ancient tombs to Nile River tours and more, now’s your chance to see the best-of-the-best The pyramids of Egypt, ancient tombs painted with intricate motifs, and temples whose walls and columns are covered in hieroglyphics—it’s no wonder Egypt has fascinated writers, artists, filmmakers, and architects for centuries. There are plenty of places in the world where you can marvel at feats of modern engineering, but in order to grasp the fundamental principles of architecture, you need to visit Egypt. Seeing the ancient temples built adhering to the precise rules of symmetry and decorated by hieroglyphics carved as reliefs into the stone, puts all other architectural feats into perspective. “I have been to Egypt about ten times, and I never stop being amazed and falling in love with it all over again,” Elizabeth Gordon told Condé Nast Traveler. She is a cofounder of the award-winning tour operator Extraordinary Journeys, which has been giving tours of Egypt since its inception in 2008. “I love the fact that this is the only place in the world I know of where you can you see the physical evidence of the development of a culture over a period of more than 3,000 years: the development of the pyramids of Egypt, the transition to tombs, the development of hieroglyphics, of tomb drawings, of a sophisticated religion with a panoply of gods, and goddesses each with their own stories and personalities, the dramas of the royal families and shifts in power. And all this takes place in hauntingly beautiful edifices, many of them built to honor a spiritual connection, and I feel that connection even today. There is a plan and symmetry on such a grand scale that it strains imagination to understand how any of it was possible with the tools of the time.” Of course, traveling in Egypt—especially for first-time visitors—is quite challenging logistically. Extraordinary Journeys will not only make your trip seamless, but the tour operator will also give you unparalleled access to sites without the crowds and send one of the country’s foremost Egyptologists to guide you and make these ancient places come alive. Here are the sights not to miss. www.cntraveler.com/story/egypts-must-see-architectural-marvels?24 August 2022

2 ~~~ Your September 2022 Horoscope: The Trips to Take—and Avoid—This Month, According to Your Sign In a new column, professional astrologer Kirah Tabourn reads your monthly horoscope—and spells out how it may shape your travels. As you pack in the final beach days of the summer and look forward to what's ahead, things are shifting in the stars and September ushers in a totally different vibe. While things cool down temperature-wise, the change-making intensity of August chills out a bit too. That isn’t to say that September isn’t rife with pivots and fluctuations, but it’s definitely not as overwhelming as what we moved through last month. The astrology of August pushed us to our limits, it showed us the type of intense pressure that we are capable of surviving. September brings us a necessary moment of pause in the form of a Mercury Retrograde, giving us permission to stop, catch our breath, look around, and proceed forward with some grace and dignity. It’s a process, though. Mercury stations retrograde on September 9 and remains in backward motion until it stations direct on October 2, when retrograde ends. When Mercury—the planet that governs communication, the sharing and receiving of data and information, as well as local travel—slows down to a stop and pivots to move backward on September 9, it’s our sign to slow down and pivot as well. Specific parts of your life will be up for review, re-evaluation, or re-dos during the retrograde period. Whether you’re traveling this month or staying in, you’ll thank yourself in October by heeding the call to take advantage of this three-week portal in Retrograde Land by using the time to slow down and reflect before life—and travel—revs back up in October. Below, your September 2022 horoscope. Astrologer's note: Below we refer to your signs as “rising” signs, also known as your ascendant sign. Horoscopes are more accurate when read this way—using your birth time and location, you can quickly find your rising sign online (it takes less than 30 seconds). www.cntraveler.com/story/september-horoscope-2022#26 August 2022

4 ~~~ The products that make long-haul flights more comfortable, according to frequent travellers From dehumidifying masks to compression socks Even for the most experienced travellers, the actual process of getting to your destination is hardly ever the fun part – especially recently, as thousands of weekly flight delays and cancellations have become the norm. Unforeseen inconveniences aside, there are certainly travellers who enjoy the aviation experience (myself included), and have fine-tuned the art of packing for a strenuous long-haul flight. For the seasoned explorer with rusty travel skills or the newbie headed to their first far-flung destination, we’ve asked those frequent travellers to share their best tips, tricks, and gear to get through – and maybe even enjoy – a long-haul flight. www.cntraveller.com/article/what-to-pack-for-a-long-haul-flight#23 August 2022

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission. It’s no secret that the moisture-depleting aircraft cabin coupled with a lack of comfortable, restful sleep are the two primary reasons why passengers appear a tad worse for the wear after a long trip. Yet somehow, flight attendants who often work multiple flights per day—including red-eyes and long-haul routes, crossing multiple time zones—and have to be ready for extended duty days caused by delays and unforeseen situations, appear to defy all odds. As you walk down the aisle at the end of the flight and look toward your cabin crew as they say goodbye, they always seem to look fresh, like they just left their house and haven’t been traveling at all. So how do they do it? I spoke with a few flight attendants to find out what’s on their beauty checklist before, during, and after a flight to keep them looking ready for takeoff at all hours of the day. Below, their best skincare and beauty tips, primed for frequent fliers to steal. www.cntraveler.com/story/flight-attendants-share-beauty-secrets?7 September 2022

6 ~~~ U.S. Airlines Are Cutting Thousands of Fall Flights—Here’s What to Know Including how it could impact the cost of airfare. After a summer plagued by flight delays and cancellations, U.S. travelers are looking ahead to the fall and hoping for smoother operations. As airlines are doing the same, they're making the choice to cut thousands of flights into the fall and holiday season. Earlier this week, American Airlines alone cut 31,000 flights from its November schedule, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. “The recent cuts appear to impact routes between smaller cities to hubs and in some cases less flights between major hubs,” says Mike Arnot, an airline industry commentator and spokesman for Cirium. “Does the airline really need 15 flights a day when 9 might do?” www.cntraveler.com/story/airlines-cutting-fall-flights#19 August 2022

7 ~~~ These Essentials Will Help You Stay Healthy While Traveling During Flu Season The cure for any vacation ailment: packing your own on-the-go pharmacy. All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission. Paid moment from Fluzone The industrial white lights of the Finnish pharmacy pierced through my eyes as I played a losing game of charades with the pharmacist. Her amicable disposition gave way to frustration as I tried to mime that my head was spinning and my throat was on fire. All I wanted to do was go back to my Helsinki hotel and melt into the bed. But I was about to set off on a camping trip the next day, so I had to fast-forward my recovery—and needed the best possible cure for the cause. Whether it was that sudden bout of the flu in Finland, a deep splinter in Italy, seasickness in the Galapagos and Iceland, or tummy troubles in Nepal, Indonesia, and Romania, I’ve succumbed to the fact that my global travels will often be plagued by some sort of minor health ailment. What the symptoms might be and when they might pop up are an unpredictable reality. Worrying about self-care and general wellness is tough enough at home, but when you’re out of your element in an unfamiliar place, and have to navigate a language barrier, it only adds to the stress of the situation. Instead of having to depend on Google Translate's camera to navigate medication labels, I now have a carefully curated Away F.A.R. pouch filled with every kind of product for any general ailment that might arise, in order to ensure that my travels are as problem-free as possible. Below, I've broken down all the essentials you might want to add to your own health kit when considering how to stay healthy on the road. www.cntraveler.com/story/tools-to-stay-healthy-on-the-road#6 September 2022

8 ~~~ What to Do If an Airline Loses Your Luggage Mishandled luggage is on the rise—if you're one such unlucky traveler, here's how to track down your stuff. The baggage carousel was starting to feel like a game of roulette, yet I still stared at it anxiously, worried my gamble of checking a bag wasn't going to pay off. The odds were already stacked against me: I had been on a canceled flight the night before, and it took standing by on two more to finally get from Newark, New Jersey, to London: 27 hours after my original arrival time. Several airline agents assured me that international regulations dictated that my bag had to follow me. But as I roamed around the baggage claim area for the umpteenth time, I knew it was hopeless. I had strapped a mismatched tan belt around my suitcase to help me easily identify it—and there was nothing of the sort in the terminal lined with endless rows of unclaimed luggage. The airline app’s baggage tracking function had given me hope, saying that my bag had made the trans-Atlantic journey and was somewhere in Heathrow. But when I filed the missing baggage report, the agent explained that the app was pretty much useless and she had to look in her internal system for the actual status. Sure enough, my bag was still in New Jersey. Piled on top of travelers’ frustration with flight delays and cancellations this year has been an increase in missing, delayed, or lost luggage, together known as mishandled baggage. The reason, according to luggage storage company Bounce CEO and founder Cody Candee, is the confluence of two pandemic-related factors: increased volumes of travelers and significant staff shortages as result of many airlines employees leaving during the pandemic. “It simply means there is not enough staff to handle the amount of baggage coming through the airports,” he says. www.cntraveler.com/story/what-to-do-if-an-airline-loses-your-luggage#29 August 2022

11 ~~~ Stojo’s Collapsible Travel Cup Fits in My Jacket Pocket It’s perfect for coffees, smoothies, snacks, and every on-the-go craving in between. All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission. It’s the party trick that no one asks for, but everyone loves. I fish out what looks like a silicone disk from my bag, stretch it out like a slinky—voilà, a full-size coffee cup—and hand it to the barista. If I had a dime for every time I got a “Wow, that’s a cool cup,” I’d be ordering one in every color. My first Stojo collapsible cup was a present from a friend three years ago. At first glance, it was impossible not to love its bubblegum-pink squishiness, but it didn’t take me long to see that it was also incredibly well-designed. Stojo constructs its cups so that the pieces fit together perfectly like a puzzle: The pleats of the silicone cup allow it to fold down smoothly, and the heat sleeve and straw nestle neatly into it. The silicone’s sponginess took me a second to trust with my coffee, but the cup holds up, and even with hot liquids in it, is very comfortable to clasp with the sleeve on. This isn’t my first reusable cup: I have a few that sit on a kitchen shelf, procured to avoid the plastic and paper waste that follow my on-the-go coffee habit. But Stojo’s clever design (it collapses to just over two inches and weighs a mere four ounces when empty) makes it so much easier to throw into my bag every day—for coffees and smoothies, and when dry, for snacks, berries, even goodies from the farmers market. www.cntraveler.com/story/stojo-collapsible-cup-review#22 August 2022

12 ~~~ The Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag Was the Perfect Accessory for My Two-Week Hawaiian Honeymoon I can’t imagine ever traveling without it again. I used to think the perfect travel bag didn’t exist—that is, until I stumbled upon the now-viral Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag in May. At that time, my long-awaited Hawaiian honeymoon was about three weeks away, and I had spent months trying to track down a compact, hands-free crossbody bag. I needed something that could come with me on mornings spent hiking and snorkeling followed by leisurely afternoons sunbathing, shopping, and sipping Mai Tais. At the time, the Lululemon belt bag came in two sizes: standard and extended. I originally wanted the extended length in black; however, due to availability, I ordered the purple extended bag and the more versatile black bag in the regular length. The strap lengths only varied by a few inches, and I figured I could always return the regular variety if it was too short. I wasn’t prepared to love them as much as I did—in fact, I ended up shoving both options into my suitcase. When I slung either bag across my chest, I was immediately impressed by how light it felt. (So much so that I had a moment in Maui of thinking it was lost.) What’s more, despite its compact size, each held a full day’s essentials: an SPF stick, a bottle of sunscreen, AirPods, my iPhone, credit cards, cash, my ID, a lip balm, and, to top it all off, a disposable camera. Even after shoving all of these items into the belt bag, I didn’t feel weighed down like I had in the past (read: no shoulder pain!). While I mostly wore mine as a sling bag, you can also wear it around your waist, fanny pack style. www.cntraveler.com/story/lululemon-everywhere-belt-bag-review#15 August 2022

14 ~~~ What It Means If ‘See Agent’ Is Printed on Your Boarding Pass And how to deal with it when it does show up. There’s more information than you think encoded on your airline boarding pass. One of those codes—"see agent" or “seat assigned at gate"—can be especially disconcerting. Contrary to popular belief, those words (the verbiage varies by air carrier) do not necessarily mean that you are about to be bumped from your flight. 15 ~~~ What to Know If an SSSS Code Shows Up on Your Boarding Pass The mysterious code means a passenger is flagged for additional—and sometimes invasive—TSA screening. For travelers lucky enough not to know, SSSS stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection. It’s the Transportation Security Administration’s way of flagging airline passengers for “enhanced” screening. An SSSS code stamped on your boarding pass overrides pre-approval through a Trusted Traveler Program such as TSA PreCheck and can add 15 to 45 minutes (or more) to your boarding process. Unfortunately, there are many groups of travelers who are no strangers to being flagged repeatedly for invasive TSA screenings. But for fliers privileged enough to have a usually smooth process through security, the SSSS codes can come as a shock. www.cntraveler.com/story/what-to-know-if-an-ssss-code-shows-up-on-your-boarding-pass11 January 2022

16 ~~~ Americans Will Soon Be Able to Renew Passports Online Starting early 2023, those difficult-to-get appointments will be a thing of the past. American travelers are another step closer to being able to renew their passports online: The first 25,000 online renewal applications were recently accepted as part of a pilot of the new program, and the State Department estimates the process will fully open to the public early next year. The hope is the new system will save money, time, and effort, making the U.S. passport renewal process easier than ever. Currently, renewing a U.S. passport can be frustratingly complicated. There’s an eight- to 11-week processing time, which requires pulling together tons of forms and possibly snagging an in-person appointment. But as part of an executive order from President Biden focused on transforming federal customer experience, the Secretary of State has been working on a new online system “that does not require any physical documents to be mailed.” www.cntraveler.com/story/americans-will-soon-be-able-to-renew-passports-online#22 August 2022

17 ~~~ 8 Airports Where You Can Reserve a Fast Lane Through the TSA Checkpoint—for Free Reserve by Clear is a complimentary program that lets you book an appointment with TSA—and it's expanding to more airports. Paid Partnership with Delta There's no doubt about it: Airport security is a stressful experience, especially since many airports have felt more crowded lately. Fortunately for travelers, both airlines and airports are launching new technology that promises to ease the tension of waiting in snaking lines at the TSA checkpoint. Delta Air Lines, for instance, has been rolling out facial matching technology that whisks travelers through the check-in process, luggage drop, security line, and boarding process without ever needing to show a boarding pass or government ID. Instead, passengers simply look at a camera for a few moments and let their face serve as their identification. Travelers with TSA PreCheck can opt in to the program, which debuted at airports in Atlanta and Detroit in 2021. (The airline is also revolutionizing its onboard experience, with new partnerships with Impossible Foods, Peloton, and Spotify). www.cntraveler.com/story/airports-with-free-fast-lanes-through-security#12 September 2022

18 ~~~ Amtrak Is Restarting One of Its Most Scenic Routes Just in Time for Fall Getaways The Amtrak Cascades, which winds through the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest, has been paused since For the first time in more than two years, Amtrak is resuming service on one of its most scenic routes: The Amtrak Cascades route, which runs from Oregon to Vancouver and weaves through some of the Pacific Northwest's most beautiful natural formations along the way. The Cascade route was first paused in spring 2020, as travel between the U.S. and Canadian borders shut down due to the pandemic. Now, tickets are on sale again for the route's relaunch on September 26. When the route first resumes, Amtrak will operate one daily roundtrip between Seattle and Vancouver, stopping at five cities in Washington state along the way: Edmonds, Everett, Stanwood, Mount Vernon, and Bellingham. (Normally the full route runs from Eugene, Oregon, up to Vancouver.) Along the nearly 200-mile route, riders will be treated to gorgeous scenery, as the train runs along the Pacific coastline and offers views of the craggy Cascade Mountains and the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountains. On the Oregon leg of the trip, which Amtrak plans to phase in with separate roundtrips between Eugene and Portland, the train also crosses the Columbia River Gorge and passes Mount Hood. And let’s not forget that her reign actually began on foreign soil—the 25-year-old then-princess was staying at the Treetops Hotel in Aberdare National Park, Kenya, when she first learned about the death of her father, George VI, on the night of February 6, 1952. Whether it was traveling the high seas on the Royal Yacht Britannia or turning far-flung locations into must-visit holiday destinations, the Queen always knew how to circumnavigate the globe in style. 21 ~~~ 7 New Sleeper Train Routes Around the World We Can’t Wait to Try These vintage-inspired lines whisk travelers through Asia, Africa, and Europe. I'm no stranger on a train. I once spent five months traveling around India's railways; a few years later, I traversed the world on rail tracks, covering 45,000 miles over the course of seven months. When I reflect on more than 200 journeys, I realize it was the night trains that most enveloped me: the stillness, the phone calls made under duvets, the solitary reader in the dining car. After lights-out, I'd wait for the sound of even breathing before climbing down the ladder and standing in the corridor alone—watching red skies bleed into silver lakes and mists encircling forests. During one memorable overnight, I watched moonlight pour across the black Tibetan plateau, revealing threads of water working their way down from the origins of the Yangtze River. It was on sleeper trains that I'd bear witness to the earth opening up, the day seeming to dawn just for me. On rare occasions, I'd spot a fellow night owl and we'd exchange nods that seemed to say, “Isn't this magic?” www.cntraveler.com/story/7-new-sleeper-train-routes-around-the-world-we-cant-wait-to-try#7 September 2022

U.S. travelers looking to add a little more comfort and glamour to their in-flight experience got a bit of good news this week: Emirates announced it will begin flying its brand new premium economy class to the U.S. for the first time in December. The Dubai-based airline, known for its opulent aircraft cabins and friendly flight crew, has been slowly rolling out its new premium economy cabin—which features spacious seats, calf-and-foot rests, and other perks—across its route network since early 2021. Now, Emirates premium economy service is being expanded to New York's John F. Kennedy airport starting December 1. The cabin will be available on flights EK203 and EK204 between Dubai and JFK. 23 ~~~ These Airlines Allow You to Block the Seat Next to You Give yourself room to breathe on your next flight by ensuring no one is in the seat next to you—for a discounted fee. Choosing an airline seat can often feel like a game of chance. Even the most experienced travelers are just tossing the dice when they check a box on the seat map, with no control over who their onboard neighbors will be or whether they’ll luck out and get a whole row to themselves. But now some airlines have a convenient new feature—the ability to block out the seat next to you. Earlier this week, Australian airline Qantas announced the trial of its “Neighbour Free" seating option, allowing passengers the option to ensure the seat next to them will remain free for a fee. The company says that the program is currently being tested on six domestic routes within Australia, and is not guaranteed to stay empty until departure time. The option is currently being offered on an invitation-only basis to eligible customers on those select routes, who will receive an email before their flight, with costs varying by route. The airline cautions that the extra seat is then meant to remain empty, and not to be used for infant seating or extra carry ons, including musical instruments. Qantas hopes to gauge customer feedback during this trial period, and if the idea sticks, they’ll roll it out to more domestic routes later this year. And they’re not the only ones who have gotten into the business of promising some on-board elbow room, especially in the age of pandemic travel. Here are the airlines currently offering the opportunity to block out your adjacent seat at a discounted cost. www.cntraveler.com/story/how-to-block-the-airline-seat-next-to-you#9 September 2022

Here we round up the best holiday destinations in February if you're seeking warm and sunny weather As winter lumbers on, it gets harder to find super-hot, short-haul sunshine – but don’t give up. A mild-weather city break and a surprisingly sophisticated island stay are both about four hours away from the UK, and are equally capable of providing a much-needed recharge. If, however, the drab skies are driving you to desperate measures – insofar as a massive blowout break can be called desperate – there are plenty of far-flung options seen in their best light this month (and be sure to check government travel advice for every destination). Whether it’s a truly tropical beach break, a remote road trip on the other side of the world or an epic once-in-a-lifetime excursion… well, that’s your choice. www.cntraveller.com/gallery/where-is-hot-in-february#14 November 2022

So we've rounded up the 10 most sunny destinations around the world Spring has sprung once March arrives, but it isn’t all twittering birds and sunshine yet – and not hot enough to tuck away the winter coat. Time to retreat to a land far, far away, then, where sapphire seas, lush landscapes and blissed-out beaches are heating up. Depending on how adventurous you’re feeling, you could opt for a heavy hitter in the Caribbean or an off-the-radar archipelago in the Andaman Sea. There are sunny cities, too, and a few far-flung festivities to put a proper spring in your step. Scroll for our pick of where is hot in March, and plan your early spring sunshine escape. www.cntraveller.com/gallery/where-is-hot-in-march#6 December 2022
