Will be coming from brussels to london and want to catch train to a nice place sth of london where we will be able to pick up a car to drive around England. Not Bath as we doing one day tour there from london. Got voucher with our flight. I'm thinking of Brighton at moment. Opinions would be great. And thanks to everyone who replies.

I went on the members tour of Southern England with Insight in 2011. We stopped for a few hours in Brighton, and it is not far from London, so i think it might be a good place to pick up a car. Many years ago DH and I took the train to Portsmouth which was a nice and comfortable ride, but if you want to see Brighton it was closer. I visited the Royal Pavilion, weird and over the top decor but interesting to see. Are you planning to drive around Southern England?

Thanks for replying. Will have a look at Portsmouth too. We want to have a look around devon (my dad was born in Paignton or Holme) and then we will drive up north. Have approx 12 days to look around.

I enjoyed seeing this part of England, we spent about 5 nights in Devon and Cornwall. The roads are narrow and winding, with high hedges, we had the advantage that we could see over the hedge rows from the bus. We stayed 3 nights in Exeter, I think I would recommend staying in small towns instead.

I assume you mean South of London?
If so, then Portsmouth is a great spot. There are loads of museums and you can see the ships as well. Or, you could go to the Spinnaker Tower.

I have driven around Devon and Cornwall and found it quite disappointing because as Marielouise says, it is full of narrow roads and hedges. We had previously been on a coach tour and marvelled at the wonderful scenery. It was only when we were driving around ourselves that we realised we were looking over the hedges in the coach.
