I see it hasn't taken long for the spammers to find the forum.

Thanks for reporting this, Tulips & Chech. It's been a good exercise for me to work out how to deal with vandals. As will be the case with all future spam attacks, the offender has been permanently banned. This involves a double process, one of which includes blocking their IP address which means they have to go to some trouble to register and obtain a different IP address (e.g. use a different computer). If they do this they will be banned again. And again. And again. I think I can actually ban them faster than the time it takes them to obtain a new IP address, register and post the spam, so they're wasting their own time more than anyone else's. You may have noticed that I recently assumed a global moderator/administrator role. As I am logged in here so often, it made sense to be able to monitor any threats or change forum structures etc. Now that I see how easy this all is, I am absolutely gobsmacked that Trafalgar didn't apply the same meagre efforts to protect its forum. Spam lasted there for many days before anybody bothered to moderate that board.....

Nothing new about spam, Chech. Apart from the fact that it uses better technology these days....

Canada actually introduced anti spam legislation back in July. I'm not sure it's done much good though. I still get emails from companies that didn't get my permission to continue emailing me after July 1.

Oz, it appears the banned member still shows up. If you look at the newest member, it shows the person and in brackets (banned). But, you can still click on the name and view the profile. Is that how it is supposed to be?

Not all the actions take effect immediately, Tulips. The spammer's account was also deleted, which appears to have worked - click on their profile and there's nothing there now. I suspect that there's nothing that can be done re the notification of newest member as it's just a remnant that can be ignored. If it doesn't disappear of its own accord, it will when a new member registers.

I now see that the final remnant of that person's presence has gone without trace, too. The member list reverts back to the previous newest member and it's as though the spammer never showed up. I have learned a couple of steps here that will make all this happen faster next time, so I should almost be thanking this person for assisting in keeping riff-raff like them out in future. The Trafalgar forum never seemed to have tried much to erase the member names left behind by spammers. I suspect that they had lost interest in their own forum well before it became obvious to the members participating.
