1 ~~~ Hi from Rick: What Travelers Do When We Can’t Travel Dear Traveler,
A few weeks ago, I thought I'd be heading out on Easter Sunday for Istanbul, then Germany, then France. But I don't have to tell you: Things have changed.
Instead of packing my bags, I'm taking a walk through my hometown of Edmonds, Washington, looking out across Puget Sound at the snowcapped Olympics. The streets and sidewalks are almost empty…the domain of the birds and the squirrels. Every house between me and the shoreline is filled with families — parents home from work wondering about the future of their jobs, elders considered "high-risk" wishing loved ones could visit, and children who don't know why they can't just have their friends over.
The theme of my March was cancelling (or, as I like to remind myself, "postponing") plans: Lectures and public-television pledge drives across the US. That spring research trip to Europe. And, as of now, all of my company's tour departures through May 18.
About three weeks ago — what seems like an eternity now — I gathered my staff of about 100 outside, behind our building, to explain how I see things and to let them know they'd all be working from home for the foreseeable future.
Looking around at those faces, I was sad to realize this was the last time we'd all be together in one place for a while. Just as the sun peeked through the clouds, I assured them that this will pass, and we'll come out of this crisis intact and ready to pick up where we left off.......................
