This travel tale was written by Jenno and relates to a Trafalgar Tour. It was originally posted on the Trafalgar forum.
I have put together some notes that I have had, so slowly I will get there. But counting the people who went on the trip, I was surprised that not many Australians went.
Australians 9
Canadians 10
South Africans 9
USA 13
New Zealand 10
This makes 51 people on the coach. We all got on well, & I thought even though we all came from different parts of the world it did not matter. Our TD was amazing, Veronica Stel, & she was always talking to a few of us each day. The driver was very careful, & we had no incidents from him. Just at the border where we needed to show our passports, we were fine, though we didn't talk, or smile as our papers were looked at so carefully. The driver had a problem, but we never knew what it was. I think they did it just for something to do. Two males came in to the coach, & just had a look, then they got off the coach.

Day 1. 3rd July, 2013.
All the packing at last has been done, and it is almost time to leave our house in Adelaide, and go to the Airport. The excitement was mounting, and at last we were able to board the Cathay Pacific plane, and our destination was Berlin. I was so excited, and my husband was also. All those months of thinking and planning our trip. Unfortunately we realised that we were in economy class, and we had not a lot of space. I watched three movies, and now it was time to grab a blanket, & try & have a nap. It was a nap. So hard to go to sleep. The idea in the future, I will have two pre days. The plane seemed to go on for ever and ever. We are heading for Frankfurt Airport. This is a huge airport, but it worked out fine. It was 1 am & even though we were in a huge line, it was not moving. Both of us needed a sleep again. As we were chatting away, I was thinking of the Trafalgar Tour that I had chosen. We start from Berlin and finish in Moscow.
We are going to get on a domestic plane to Berlin - Tegal. It was a smooth ride, and we arrived in the Airport. We were tired, and my suitcase seemed to be heavier than ever. We chose a wonderful man who showed us some sights & it was very interesting. Our tipping starts from now!!!! Because we got to Berlin a day before we start our trip no transfers were available for us. We met up with our Travel Director, Veronica Stel during the day, and she wanted to look at our passport, because to go in to Moscow we need a special Visa. Veronica said everything was okay. We had just left a cold state, and in Berlin the temperature today was 23C, and warm. We are now at Hotel Andels, and it is very comfortable. We finished the day and had quite a few hours of sleep.

Day 2
Hotel Andels Breakfast at leisure. 4th July. Weather 21C.
We are expecting six more people, to make the 49 people on our Trip. So we decided to have a look around Berlin. When we are in a country we have not seen before we always go on the hop on, hop off bus. It took us about 3 hours, to see the sights. By this time we realise that we need to get back to the hotel, because at 4PM we are going on an orientation tour, and we are meeting our other passengers. We saw many walls and they have writing on them. Also beautiful rainbow colours on the walls also. I met Sandy, who lives in Melbourne, and she was in contact with me. Over the last month, she decided to leave the "Trip Group".It was good to catch up with her. She was in a single room. There were approx. 9 ladies plus a male who was also solo too. We enjoyed talking to him, and we were told he is from Canada. Also there were six New Zealanders and a couple more. I found it very interesting talking to people who are not from Australia. We had 49 on the coach, and we were going back (or forward) rotating each day. We all did very well, & it was a great idea. Again I brought too many clothes with me, but my luggage was not as bad as other times. I have added the Driver, and Veronica on to the list of people. She was brilliant, and she is Dutch. But she speaks quite a few languages, and she recently learnt Russian. Enough to communicate with others if she needs to.
This evening we had at 4pm an orientation tour, and it was followed by a Welcome Reception. I expected sandwiches, but we had a lovely array of German Food. Tiredness came again, good to go to bed, and after breakfast we were having our first Local Guide.

Day 3 5/7/2013 Weather 24c Hotel Andels
Today we had our first Local Guide. We were shown some of the sights. The Brandenburg Gate was the first place to visit. Also the Reichstag, and the Kurfurstendamm. In our time we went to the Pergamon Museum. This is where we got an English book, and I have not read it through, but we have it here for when I decide it is time to read it. It is heavy reading. I have to now say that my husband took his laptop and I was hoping to have some good photos. When we got home, we don't know what happened, but we lost everything. I had my camera, but was unable to post any pictures. The Prussion Palaces and gardens in Berlin and also in Brandenburg. I found this to be absolutely stunning. Quite a few of the New Zealanders would come on the coach to have a look around, but when we were doing our optional excursions they were given some information from the Guide, and they were happy to go shopping. They must have had a new wardrobe. I found them to be friendly, and easy to talk to. We were shown where Checkpoint Charlie was. The Neues (new museum) , did not offer sufficient space, St'u'ler who was tasked to build the New Museum, that was opened in 1859. Later on the reconstructed until 2009, by the Architect David Chopperfield, for about 300 Million Euro.
The Brandenburg Tor was the only structure left standing in the ruins. It was closed in 1961, and that is when the Berlin Wall was built. In 1989 the wall was falling, In 2000 more thorough reconstruction of the monumental structure was carried out. I felt sad about the wars, and Germany was bombed, as were other surrounding places. I have always enjoyed looking at the Brandenburg gate.
We had our Optional Excursion - Berlin by night. It was fun with German food, and we all had fun with a few drinks included. I don't drink alcohol, but Veronica looked after me. During the day I noticed that my ankles were starting to swell. So a good rest for me tonight. We all thought that we all got on so well. No one grizzled, or complained when we were on the coach. We were told not to eat on the coach - that rule was broken when we arrived in Russia.

Day 4 6/7/2013 Marriott Hotel Weather 22C
We had a lovely breakfast as each day we chatted to someone we were getting to know most people now. We all got on our coach, and I always know where to sit, because we are behind a couple in front of them. If we made a mistake, it is easy to work out where to sit though. We at this stage had several people coughing. Unfortunately we had one male who had a dreadful cough. No hands over his mouth, but he got a few looks from us.
We are now driving North to Rostock to board our ferry to Denmark. This then takes us to Copenhagen. The Capital. We met up with our friends, and it was good to have a chat. We had been told that it was a free night, so we were able to have a good look around. I didn't see anything worth buying, just a few souvenirs. We had a drink with our friends after some food, We needed to have a walk around, after having been in a coach during the day. I was really disappointed with the Little Mermaid. I thought it would be bigger than it was. I bought a little mermaid, and it sits on our display cabinet. We had a guide to take us around. We went to the Stock Exchange.
Another day is over, and sleep came easily. I am not an early riser, but on this trip I got up very early.

Day 6 7/7/2013 Weather: 22C Hotel Marriott Copenhagen
Today we had another guide. We were taken around the countryside in Denmark, and one of the places we went to on the coach was to see the Prince and Princess in their Palace. Mostly they shift around to their other Palaces, or go to friends place. They are very hospitable, and they take their family with them. Unfortunately when we went there no one was there. Frederik, Mary, and their four children.
The Danes have a happy life, and they love riding their bicyles everywhere. Where ever we go we see MANY bikes, and they continually ring the bells of their bike to warn people of their presence. When they want to go to the city, or go to work on the train, they leave their bikes near the train station. They are padlocked so they are not taken by other people. When the day is finished they get on their bikes again, and off to home again. I found that most of the Danes have lovely blonde hair. When I was on the ferry I was really taken by a family of six, and they were a very happy family.
At night time we went to the Tivoli. We met up with friends again, and we had a walk along the long line of shops. We were getting very tired by now, and Veronica was going to pick us up. Some of our other travellers had walked back to our hotel. Veronica was in the Tivoli to have a quick look. We had an icecream, and by then it was time to get on the coach. Our Local guide took us to the Royal Residence, called the Brahehus Castle. Tonight we had a traditional dinner. .

3 ~ Capitols of the North ~ July 2013
Day 7 8/7/2013 Weather: 22 Park Inn Stockholm
We travelled to Oresund to the forests, and we saw the wonderful views of the Brahehus Castle, on route to the Capital of Stockholm. The warmer weather was making my feet swell. We have quite a few laughs with our friends in the coach. Veronica had us shifting each day by moving two seats. Each day she would have a chat to all of us. We were told that we were having dinner tonight in the Hotel.
We had an optional which was called Swedish Ice Bar and Panoramic.
We were given a drink in a glass made of ice in the minus temperatures of the Ice-Bar which is made completely from the frozen waters of the River Torne in Sweden. My experience was I didn't enjoy it at all. I was given a jacket that was insulated, and then I walked in to the room and it was absolutely freezing. I quickly got my drink, and I quickly drank my soft drink. I quickly left the room, and I sat with some of our friends. The younger ones were having a wonderful time in this freezing room. We then went to the Panoramic Tower, Then we went to the viewing platform of the Tower Sweden's highest building. We saw lovely views of the city. I did enjoy that optional. We were happy to go to bed, after our busy day. I feel sorry for the Guides. They have to remember all the places that we go to. We are going tomorrow to view the Royal Palace, and I would have loved to have gone in there. We were going to the City Hall.
Capitals of the North
Day 8 9/7/2013 Weather: 20C Park Inn Stockholm.
Again in Stockholm we had some free time. We did have a guide today, and we had a lovely day. We saw the Royal Palace, and from the outside it was nothing special, but inside it was wonderful. I was given pictures of what are in the Palace. Glorious!!! Hopefully we will be able to go back to see the palace. We were taken to the City Hall. It is one of the most visible and best-loved buildings in the city's architectural landscape. The people of Stockholm are justly proud of their City Hall both for the originality and beauty of its construction.
I decided to do a bit of shopping and I bought some Matryoshka dolls. I also bought some mirrors. They looked as though there was powder in them, but they just had the mirror. I was delighted with my shopping. Normally I don't do much at home. But I do have a shopping day every now and again.
We had to put our night attire, plus a few other clothes for the next day, and we put them in a small bag. Our Coach easily fitted in to the small space he had - we are very confident with his driving. We went aboard the ship, and we were happy to have a look around. We were given the time of 8 PM, and we were going to have a smorgasbord. It was really nice. We had so many options, it was great. We had drinks, and if you want good wine, you have to pay for it. Luckily I don't drink alcohol. I went in to the Duty Free, and bought a few Estee Lauder products. I must say about our driver he was wonderful throughout the whole time, he was so careful, and I was confident with his driving. Unfortunately he spoke no English. He would sell a bottle of water for 1 or 2 Euro.
The next morning we were in Helsinki, and we would have a free night - choosing what we wanted for dinner, and then back to have a good sleep. I don't think I told you that our beds were bunk beds, and I thought I wouldn't fit in the bed, but we managed to and we had a good sleep. Having a shower was tricky too. But we were okay. It was an adventure going on this lovely ship.

Day 9 10/7/2013. Temp: 20 Scandic Grand Marina Hotel Helsinki.
The day before was busy, and we are heading off to St. Petersburg. We did find a place to eat for dinner, but we had a very quick meal. We were so tired, by now, and we were very early to go to bed. We had a great sleep!!!!

4 ~ Capitals of the North
Day 10 11/7/2013 Temp: 22 Holiday Inn.
We are travelling to St.Petersburg. We were in the forest of Korelia to the Russian Border.
I am disappointed I didn't buy more dolls for me.
Again we have another local guide, and our driver took us to the city's sights. We saw the Tsar's winter Palace. I can imagine how cold it must get in Russia. We went to St. Isaac's Cathedral, and the statue of Peter the Great. We were having dinner in the Holiday Inn..
It was very comfortable & we had no one complaining. We are almost on the border, so we were asked to get our lunch for the next day, and we were not to leave the coach unless we were told.
We found a little market and we had some lovely choices for lunch on the coach. We were told we could use the toilet in the coach, as Veronica was wanting to be one of the first Coach to arrive. We all felt a bit nervous, but as we were one of the first Coach to arrive, it was really great as the hall was not full of other people.
We showed our Passports, and I didn't smile, or talk. That was it. Veronica asked if we could change our money to rubles. I was amazed at the many trucks just sitting by the side of the road. Hundreds, but we didn't worry about that. Our driver was spoken to, but everything seemed to be alright. Then we had two Young Men!!! just walked into the coach, with weapons in their hands. It was all okay, and we were pleased to leave the border.
We continue our journey.
Capitals of the North
Day 11 Date: 12/7/2013. Weather: 24 Holiday Inn
With the weather I was really feeling off. Anyway, I have to say that we were all enjoying warmer weather. It was winter when we left Adelaide, and we were pleased to miss it.
This morning we had a local guide again, and in the morning we visited the Hermitage Museum. We saw one of the world's largest and most valuable art collection. This was a very interesting place to visit. There was a problem. Quite a few people couldn't stay in there, because it was very hot inside the Museum. I loved the paintings, and was thinking to myself eeny, menny, mo. No not for sale. I was hoping my husband was waiting for me, but I didn't want to miss any of the paintings. To see all of them, we would have to come back over & over. We gave our tips to the guide, and he looked quite happy. We found it very hard to find toilets, so we asked Veronica to tell us where to go. It costs money when overseas, but all the females were appreciative going to the toilet.
Tonight we were going to the "Be my Guest". It was a shame that most of the dancing girls couldn't understand us, but there was communication there with the male. There was dancing, singing, and they were trying to get everyone on to the dance floor. We had a wonderful night, the food was terrific, and it lasted for about two hours. We were staying at the Park Inn. It had no cooling, so we had cold showers, and climbed in to bed. We had an average night!!! Veronica had a secret about our next hotel. It was the Crowne Plaza. When we arrived there, we forgot about our dreadful Hotel, and we were happy to have air conditioning again. We could do emails etc. The Russians take our passbook from us, and they give them back after 24 hours. I was there to pick mine up. The time was over. When we got home again we got a new one, so I hope we fill this one too.
Capitals of the North
Day 12 13/7/2013 Weather: 25C Hotel Crowne Plaza
I haven't mentioned the border, where we had our Visa's & passports looked at. It was rather scary, and we were told to not talk, or smile. The people who work there at the border, are very solemn. They don't smile. Our driver was checked out by a male - I never found out what happened, but he was told to move on. We felt so happy leaving the border. My husband felt all of the males he saw in Moscow had very sad faces. We had so many Optionals left, but I went to everyone except on the last day. I insisted in repacking my luggage, & have a look around by our selves.
My favourite one was going to see the Ballet. It was enthralling, and one day will find one in Adelaide. We went to the Circus and after the three days in the Crowne Plaza we were looking forward to going either home, or some other place. We had a week in Hong Kong, and we spent a day in China. I would love to go there again.

5 ~ Capitals of the North
Day 13 14/7/2013. Weather: 25 Hotel Crowne Plaza.
We had a scenic drive through tiny villages. In between we chatted with those on our coach. We arrived in the Capital - Moscow.
We see the real Russia. We went to the countryside, and the first thing we saw was this lovely working monastery - I enjoyed it very much. I stayed there for a long time. One of the Priests had the most amazing ability to sing these lovely songs. It was a special day, and people came from far and wide. Not very often that one sees a working Monastery. It took an hour to go to the toilets, then I realised there was no toilet. I left, as I have never used a drop toilet before. We then moved on to locally Russian handicrafts. So many stalls. I was after a glasses case, and a nice plate to go in my display cabinet. Well my husband worked out what he thought I would like, so I went and bought both items. I wondered if it was the lovely girl with blonde hair. We bought from her.
I was able to have an icecream, and it was lovely, as it was getting quite warm. We had about two hours there, and I thought it was a great day.
We waited for the coach, and he didn't take long to pick us all up.
Capitals of the North
Day 14 15/7/2013 Weather: 25 C Hotel Crowne Plaza
We still have quite a few optionals to do. I went to the ballet and it was beautiful.. Didn't think I would like it, but yes I loved it. Very enjoyable, & I would like to go again. The others went on our coach, and they went elsewhere.
Thinking now one of the optionals - was the circus - by this time we were very tired, and bed was calling us. I would not go again to the Circus. We could go to one in Adelaide, but we thought seeing a circus in Russia, would be a treat. Now I am happy that we did go.
I really enjoyed the Metro, and the Red Square at night. We enjoyed looking at the beautiful paintings, in the ceiling. Also beautiful chandeliers, stained glass, and after going on the train for one stop, we then came back again. Then we went for two stops, and came back again. We finished getting on the train again for 3 stations. It was a fast train. The tour then finished. We all got on the escalaters, and this was the only time we had a problem. One of the males in our group, fell over the escalators, and then he fell on the female near me. The staff in the metro were very quick and the escalater was stopped immediately. Luckily there was an ambulance near by, and both the male and the female were treated by a doctor, and a nurse. I think both of them would feel sore for a couple of days.
We went to the Red Square, at night. We walked and walked. It was still light, we were shown different places to look at on the red square. Veronica enjoyed herself. We enjoyed ourselves, and we were ready to have a good sleep.
Capitals of the North
Day 15 16/7/2013 Temperature: 26 Crowne Plaza Moscow.
Our coach took us around Moscow and we were shown places we had not been to. Then I saw the time. I wanted to go to repack my luggage, and get ready for our special night for Veronica, and our driver. I felt they got full marks, so I popped in a bit more money - I can see the work they do. Always busy, and organising. Veronica has lost weight, after this trip, she was coming back to be the Travel Director again, for the Capitals of the North. She tried to teach us a bit of Russian, but I found it very hard. My husband was on the coach doing the last optional, and the lady who was a guide had the people on the coach, and most of the were asleep..
Our farewell was terrific. Kisses, hugs, laughs, and a lovely meal to finish off a great night. We have the names of all the people. I hope that Veronica & the Driver were rewarded. Time to have a sleep, and this time we had transfers. We went to Domodedovo Airport, and we had a long time to get on our plane. It was a very busy airport, but most are. It was a pleasure to go with Trafalgar.
