How on earth were you able to get this news. Must be hard especially for Chech as she was able to spend some time with him on one of her trips. I suppose it was the deadly cancer that took him. Rough day for me as I learned just a while ago that one of my former colleagues also had passed away the day before he was scheduled to retire.

From his daughter Narelle. He was actually planning a trip to Canada later on this year, with a side trip to Victoria for a visit, but not meant to be...I think it was Mr. Oz that Chech spent time with on her trip to the land of "Oz"...

We are very saddened by the untimely passing of our friend, forum member and fellow traveller, Tony.
Tony was a long-serving member of the Trafalgar Forum ("Tony Rum City") where he brightened our days with his contributions, wit and assistance to members. In those days he lived in Bundaberg, the sub-tropical Queensland city, famous for sugar cane and of course, Bundaberg rum. Unfortunately, his wife developed a terminal illness and in mid 2013 they moved to Perth on the other side of Australia to be with family before she passed away. Unfortunately that occurred all too soon, in October of that year.
Tony never lost his passion for travel and did several solo trips in the following three years. However, in February 2015 he received the bad news that he had multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood cells. Whilst it's incurable, it is treatable and Tony had a very positive outlook, telling me in a private email just last month that it would probably take ten to fifteen years to get him.
But nothing, not even this illness, was going to interfere with Tony's travels. In April 2015 he went on a cruise that took him to the 100th year commemoration of the Gallipoli landings in Turkey. Soon after, he took another cruise from Fremantle to Sydney, around the north coastline of Australia. I was in Darwin at the time (June 2015) and held back for an extra day in order to meet Tony, but unfortunately he wasn't able to make it work. He continued the cruise to Sydney where he visited friends before heading back to Bundaberg and then Cairns. From here, he joined another tour that crossed the continent, including several days of camping. It wasn't until August that he finally returned to his home in Perth. That's a frenetic pace for anybody, especially a person with a serious illness! Such was Tony's passion for travel. Tony had been looking forward to his next trip overseas, one that would take him to a part of the world few people seem to go to.
Sadly, Tony went to sleep last weekend and never woke up. Today I spoke via phone to a member of his family and learned what had happened. Of course, the family is shocked, especially due to the sudden and unexpected course of events. I was told that Tony was one of the nicest people you could meet and I readily concurred. For someone who we know mainly from his forum posts, it is no surprise that he was every bit the same gentleman and friendly person in real life
After Trafalgar closed its discussion board, Tony joined us here at The Travel Forum and continued to contribute valuable and entertaining commentary on travel. We have enjoyed his time with us and thank him for being our friend who will be sadly missed. I have conveyed condolences to the family on behalf of the members of this forum.
Vale Tony.

I'm very sorry to hear this news. It saddens me that another person has been taken too soon due to this terrible decease. It sounds like Tony lived a full life traveling the world and doing what he loves, and this is a reminder to us all to live for today, and not to put off doing the things we love until tomorrow, because you just don't know what tomorrow will bring. I'm also glad to hear that he passed away peacefully in his sleep, and I hope to didn't suffer in the end. Rest in Peace Tony!

So sad to hear this, I enjoyed his writing very very much. I remember the beautiful blue rose he grew in memory of his wife, so he had a green thumb as well. My condolences to the family and many friends. Good bye friend, we will miss you.

Very sad to hear this. I remember reading about him, his wife and dog travelling by camper from Bundaberg to Perth and back home to arrive in time for his wife's results. This must have been on the Trafalgar forum. I found it very interesting. Unfortunately we didn't hear back from him for a long time and then he was travelling alone.

And a special mention to Jenno who will be especially feeling this loss. I know that circumstances prevent you from participating here as you would wish, Jenno, but I do hope that you are ok.
