Oh, that looks nice! Unfortunately, it's some distance outside the city and I have two free afternoons, so no time to do anything outside the city. I have the HOHO tickets for both days, so I'm going to immerse myself in central Rome. Funny thing happened yesterday....I realized I had bought books on Ancient Rome and Pompeii when I was there in 94. I dug them out to see if I could get some information, and out popped a map of Rome....I had picked it up from McDonalds. So, I know where to do lunch on both days.

Half a day to go! Yes, Boop....I'm packed! Yesterday I had a bit of a oh-no moment....woke up with a wickedly bad sore throat. Well, you want to see a Newf try every remedy under the sun! When I got that cold virus after Panama, I went looking to see how I could lessen the chance of getting hit again and learned that the reason we get the cold and flu virus in the winter is because the virus likes to latch onto your throat and likes a cooler environment. It gets settled into the throat and then spreads, so the key is to attack the sore throat quickly. That's how menthol cough drops (lollies for you guys down under) work. They heat up the throat and dissuade the virus from taking hold. So, I went mad doing everything possible to warm my throat and attack Mr. Virus...nice hot green tea, salt water gargle, anti-histamine, decongestant, cough drops, saline nasal spray, hot bean bag on the neck...I even gargled a nip of my Grant's whiskey. I was like a walking experiment. And a successful one!! But it has added about a pound of extra cough drops and stuff to my carry on. Oh, am I happy I went for Premium Economy.

It was nice but I wasn't able to sleep on the lie flat. Figured out I would have been more comfy with my head up. I was right in the nose of the plane. I'd pay for a last minute upgrade if it were available but for me, not worth thousands. Cheaper to take a preferred economy seat or premium economy and making a stop on a long trip and spending a night in a hotel. It did get me off the plane fast. That's always nice with a tight schedule.

Walking through the plane, I have looked at those lie flat beds and they do not look comfy to me. I think I also prefer to have my head up. I have never upgraded, since often it hasn't been available from Calgary in the past on Air Canada flights, maybe it is now. I could maybe have done it last year on KLM but those seat sold out fast, I think it was too late by the time we made the decision. The economy seats seem to have become tighter, last year only one flight out of 4 trans atlantic(10 hour) flights had 2 seats on the side. I don't like being crammed in in the 3 seat configuration, I end up with the middle seat and DH with the aisle seat, he is bigger than I.
I hope you have a good time in Italy, looking forward to your report.

Yeah, I don't like the 2-4-2 configuration which I have going home from Rome, but it's a daytime flight and I got an exit/bulkhead seat. The preferred seats are worth getting (bulkhead and exit row) as they are more roomy and of course, premium economy. For this last flight, the premium economy was cheaper than the economy seats! (But the plane was changed and I was switched to Lufthansa...where I got the upgrade). Did the Amalfi coast today. Fabulous!

My husband & I did a river cruise in Europe. It's the first time that hubby has been to Europe and as he's not a people person he paid for business class seats. Mind you, he said that he didn't think they were very comfortable. Just can't please some people. Will admit to some being more comfortable than others. I don't have trouble sleeping upright though.

They have the worst business class of any airline I've flown on, the "lie flat" seats are horrific and the service was the same. Their business class on the Vancouver to Amsterdam leg needs an upgrade in the worst way!

I've always slept like a baby in the lie flats on Air Canada. It's gotten to the point where I can't bear the thought of a long haul in economy. Also the constant service in business makes the time go by fast.
That said, I don't generally pay full price. I either use my certificates or hope for an LMU. Unfortunately, the really long hauls are where people will pay full price or those with super high status get first pick and LMU and certificate use aren't possible.

Freakin' good weather. I am walking around in summer wear and the Italians are wearing down jackets. They are starting to shed them now. Our guide today is saying it's been a very hot April. No one has the AC on yet and the tourists are asking for it a month earlier than usual....and the front desk staff look like they would rather be wearing mitts and scarfs.

I loved a week in Rome about 10-12 years ago, it was late April, it rained a couple of days, perfect excuse to run into a cafe and enjoy the rain or into an unknown Church and discover some paintings or sculptures that we didn't know much about it, but we learned as we went inside. I think every vacation should have a day or two of rain, helps relax and slow the pace, plus makes everything so clean and shining!

I am really amazed at the amount of people who now travel to Rome and other places, in the off season. Seeing chechs photo of the Trevi fountain (beautiful photo too) and the crowd there, made me go and look at the 2 photos that I had taken (of the crowds). The first one was on the 27th Sept 2007 and the 2nd one on the 26th Sept 2013 Just a bit of a change. Boop, many thanks for sharing chech's photos.
