I would like to go to Great Barrier Reef and whitsundays. What would be the best way to do this. I've been looking at doing a cruise which starts in Brisbane for 7 days but a bit doubtful and then perhaps stay in Brisbane and/or Gold Coast and do theme parks etc. i have been to brisbane before but not gbf. I would like to do snorkling but not deep water. I like staying in nice places. I'm thinking of going August or September next year. Is this the best time so no awful things like stingers in water. Might take my kids and grandchildren. Any ideas much appreciated.

Jellyfish season is usually between November and May, although that's no guarantee. I'd recommend taking a boat tour from Cairns or Townsville. I did this several years ago and it was a great trip. They took us out onto the reef where they have a large pontoon as a floating base. Here they have a barbecue, meals area and a platform to go snorkelling. A few guys tossed some pellets of dry fish food around the snorkellers so I suddenly found myself with a swarm of tropical fish around me. Imagine hundreds of them darting all around you - a truly amazing experience!

I'll be able to tell you more after October. One piece of advice I got from the Aussies on my last tour was to do the Outer Reef. They said the inner one is not nearly as good (lost a lot of its colour) and is crowded. On my tour, an extra $90 will get me a full day on the Outer Reef instead of the included half day on the closer reef.
