It looks like I'll have between 1 1/2 and 2 full days in Cairns depending on flight times. The full day will be on the reef as I'll upgrade from the included 1/2 day to the full day excursion which goes to the outer reef. There are some partial day optionals that I might be able to fit in. Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.
So, the other options, in no particular order, are:
1. Cairns Night Zoo Approximate value: $138 AUD per person (4 hrs)
Experience nocturnal wildlife at Cairns Night Zoo. Enjoy a delicious barbeque dinner before being led into the darkness to meet the creatures of the night. Learn how owls hunt, touch a possum and pat a Koala. After the tour join in the fun and learn some Aussie Bush Dances and sing along.
2. Cairns Tropical Zoo Approximate value: $67 AUD per person (3 hrs)
This award winning attraction is, simply, the most outstanding wildlife experience in the Cairns' region. Nowhere else in tropical Australia will you find the diversity of wildlife that is available at this wonderful oasis. Cuddle a koala, feed a kangaroo, see giant crocodiles and enjoy great wildlife presentations and tours.
3. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway & Kuranda Scenic Railway Combo Approximate value: $123 AUD per person (3 1/2 hrs)
This package combines the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway with the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway. The Skyrail will take you on an amazing experience over Australia's World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforest canopy and deep into the forest. Your Skyrail experience should take approximately 1 1/2 hours and includes spending time at the two rainforest mid-stations. Here you can participate in a Ranger guided boardwalk tour, visit the Rainforest Interpretation Centre, or take in the beautiful scenery from several panorama viewing areas. The famous Kuranda Scenic Railway was built over 100 years ago and winds its way through the tropical mountain ranges between Cairns and Kuranda. This package includes time for you to explore Kuranda 'The Village in the Rainforest'. Along the way there are rainforest walks, markets, cafes, restaurants, and galleries for you to visit.
The last two I'm not that keen on....unless there's something about them that makes them worth it...
4. Sunset Cruise Approximate value: $44 AUD per person (2 hrs)
A sunset cruise is the perfect way to start your evening. Soak in the beautiful views of the Trinity Inlet waterways, mangroves and mountains in the magical early evening sun.
5. Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park by Night Including Dinner Approximate value: $145 AUD per person (2 1/2 hrs)
Meet the Tjapukai performers before the show and enjoy a welcome drink in the retail gallery where authentic Aboriginal art including didgeridoos and boomerangs can be found. After your welcome drink, it is time for your journey into the world of the rainforest people. The Tjapukai performers will lead you into the Magic Space for an emotive didgeridoo blessing ceremony and the mystical Quinkan spirit performance. Your initiation continues with traditional face painting as the Tjapukai performers escort you to the lake. With clapsticks in hand you add to the pulsating rhythm of the corroboree while Tjapukai warriors use traditional fire sticks to create fire. Suddenly a spear is launched and a spectacular fire ball explodes into the night sky. Enjoy dining in the Boomerang Restaurant with an international buffet of hot and cold dishes plus delicious desserts. Relax after dinner while the world famous Tjapukai dancers perform live on stage. Join the cultural celebrations and learn traditional dances from the people of the rainforest.
