Oh....snow! What are the temps like in the latter half of October? Easy: No snow. Tasmania has just had an icy Antarctic blast. It's not usual to see snow like this at sea level, even in cold Tassie. Must be due to global cooling. Hobart should be the coldest part of your trip and it usually reaches 17C during October. You should be more worried about the heat - Alice Springs will be around 31C and Darwin 33C (and only dropping to 25C at night). Nice weather to Aussies, but detrimental to Newfoundlanders.

Before yesterday, 1986 was the last time it snowed down to sea level in Hobart, so it is not a common occurrence. As you would also see from the photo there wasn't much snow either. You should be fine in October. If you survive Melbourne you will survive Hobart, as in October our average temps are only 1°C lower than Melbourne.

Just looking at photos and the Bondi walk goes a lot farther than Bronte....is it worth while to do the whole thing?

Another question...In Norway, there was a chain of stores that offered great lunches - you could buy a sandwich, hot dog, great dessert etc on the go. Anything like that in Australia?

Question about television...when does Australia get prime time US shows? For example, we see The Walking Dead on Sunday nights. Season 6 starts Oct 11th. Will I be able to catch that over there?

Ahhh...cool. And it premiers within hours of the US broadcast. Cool. So you tend to get the US shows fairly quickly? What are the other "major" channels that broadcast primetime US shows like NCIS or The Blacklist etc?

We have four major free-to-air TV networks, Chech:
ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), a government owned network like the UK's BBC. Seven Network Nine Network Ten Network
In the capital cities these are found on channels 2, 7, 9 & 10.
Each of these have secondary channels and sometimes more. There are also smaller networks so there's more than a dozen channels in the major capitals. The four big networks redirect their programs to their regional channels. All TV networks are digital as analogue has been disbanded.
Most US shows appear here within hours of broadcast in America, although there are sometimes exceptions. Our ratings periods can differ to North America so sometimes an episode might be held over until the ratings period commences. We watch Blacklist, but the season has just ended.
Then there's Pay TV which can give you maybe another 150 channels.

Just to confuse you here is a link that lists all the free to air networks and what channels you will find them on depending on where you are in Australia.

After Switzerland (where all I had was BBC News for the most part), it'll be nice to have more than one channel in English....even better to be able to catch The Walking Dead.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_digital_television_channels_in_Australia You've left Hobart exposed to a number of quips there, Tassie! However, I shall be kind enough to suggest that there are so many things to look at, you don't need as much television as the other cities...

Oh....do you get the NFL games? The short answer is no. Gridiron football is neither played or observed very much here so free-to-air TV coverage is almost non-existent. The Superbowl would be an obvious exception but regular season games aren't of interest to most Aussies. Our national sport is Australian Rules Football, quite unlike Gridiron. Unfortunately, you are arriving just after the season finals. Pay-TV will be your option here as you may be able to get NFL games on ESPN. Hotels don't always carry the full range of Pay-TV channels, so if that's the case, the internet might be your only chance.

My error, wasn't clear enough, we get the same stations as the rest of Australia, just the channels are different ie nine is on channel 8, ten is on 5, seven is on 6.
We were ahead of the rest of Australia when digital started up, Hobart was the first place in Australia to get a digital only channel.

LOL. I like to say the same thing about Canada. We do better TV wise than the US does. We can get feeds from all over the country whereas (unless it's changed recently) the US is restricted. For example, in New York, you can't get a station in Seattle and in Seattle, you can't get a station in New York. I get them all.

Is there root beer in Australia? Barq's root beer?

Yep, root beer is one of my favourites, although I'm unfamiliar with that brand.
But don't ask for root beer because most vendors won't know what you're talking about. Most (but not all) root beer is marketed as 'sarsaparilla'.
It's the same stuff, made from the smilax root, with a slight flavour difference to that sold in North America.

There are several brands, but just wait for a certain person (I can't reveal his name but his initials are: Tonnet ) to log in here and declare that the best sarsaparilla is Bundaberg. And he would probably be right.

I prefer their ginger beer to their sarsaparilla. If any of your flights are on Qantas, you can try the Bundaberg ginger beer then as they have it (usually) on their drinks trolley.
