Where to See the Northern Lights All Over the World With more activity in coming years, even destinations like Scotland and Michigan are making the aurora map. BY PAUL RUBIO March 11, 2024 Witnessing the natural phenomenon of the aurora borealis belongs on every traveler’s bucket list. But determining where to see the northern lights is a complex matter—actually encountering the majestic and alien-ish green and purple glow of the night sky is not only about location, but also timing (December to March is ideal in many instances; August through April in other parts), positioning (typically from latitudes 65 to 72 degrees North), and plain ol’ luck (a clear, dark, and cloud-free sky). The awe-inspiring sight—which occurs when electrically charged solar particles interact with gasses in the earth’s atmosphere—is best enjoyed in rural areas where little light pollution allows aurora to shine its brightest. Traditionally, aurora hunters head to high-latitude destinations above the Arctic Circle in places like Finland, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Iceland, Greenland, and Alaska along a ring known as the Aurora Oval. While a light show is never guaranteed, this area close to the Earth's northern pole boasts the highest probability of catching aurora activity. www.cntraveler.com/stories/2011-11-07/best-places-to-stay-to-see-the-northern-lights

T he Most Scenic Way to Access Yellowstone National Park Is Called
the 'Most Beautiful Roadway in America' — What to KnowBeartooth Highway opened on June 1. Beautiful drives abound in the U.S., but it’s rare to find a route that makes you feel as though you’re driving in the Alps in another era — with constant mountain views, tight switchbacks, and an open road. It’s even rarer to find a drive that takes you deep enough into the wilderness that you can spot big, wild animals, including moose and grizzly bears, from the safety of your car. Meet Montana's Beartooth Highway (US 212), an almost 69-mile stretch of highway that connects the mountain town of Red Lodge, Montana, with Yellowstone National Park. Yes, the route is as beautiful as you’ve heard, garnering nicknames like the “Highway to the Sky” and “The Most Beautiful Roadway in America.” www.travelandleisure.com/beartooth-highway-most-beautiful-roadway-united-states-8659640?7 June 2024

I wouldn't travel to Europe without one of these in my handbagMy secret weapon for staying cool during a heatwave – and it’s just £12 As a Brit, I’m not really built for the heat. While others bake happily for hours, I’m donning the biggest hat I can find and frantically looking for the nearest air-conditioned room. I'm also quite pale, with the kind of skin that looks orange with only a whisper of bronzer, and for whom a spray tan is simply off-limits. If I'm not very careful, I end up lobster red after five minutes in the sun; either from the heat or from not absolutely slathering every inch of my body in SPF, or more likely both. But one recent purchase has made a big difference to my comfort levels in warmer climes – and that's a £12 electric fan. I know, I know. A fan for hot weather? Groundbreaking. But this simple, obvious addition to my handbag has made such a difference to my comfort levels while abroad that I can’t believe I didn’t have one before. I’ve spent years of my life quietly overheating on a sun lounger in my long sleeves or sitting inside stoically reading a book alone when I could have just… bought this. www.cntraveller.com/article/i-wouldnt-travel-to-europe-without-one-of-these-in-my-handbag?18 June 2024

37 Unforgettable Airport Meals Around the World From chicharron sandwiches in Lima to a noodle buffet in Tokyo and a ladies’ filet in Johannesburg. BY ARATI MENON June 28, 2024 This article is part of our airport food survival guide, which includes tips and tricks—even a hot take or two—that challenge the notion that airport meals are always dull, overpriced, and tasteless. Would you believe me if I said one of the things I look forward to most when I land in India is an idli-vada combo in a cup at Hyderabad International Airport? Probably not. Would you roll your eyes at me if I said I actively crave it when I’m back home in New York City? Likely. I wouldn’t blame you. Airport meals don’t have the best reputation for being memorable—at least not for the right reasons. Ask any traveler what they think of airport food in general and you’ll likely hear the words boring, sloppy, tasteless, and highway robbery thrown about. None of which sits well in a setting where your fate is somehow always teetering precipitously on the brink of disaster. www.cntraveler.com/story/best-airport-meals-according-to-travel-editors?

The real reason you can’t use your phone on a planeWhat happens if you forget to turn your phone on flight mode on a plane? There is something innate in human programming that makes it nigh impossible not to press the big red button – and one of the most tempting examples of this is when airline passengers are told to turn their phones off. Human beings have a level of in-built defiance, some deep-rooted desire to disobey and push boundaries, just to see what happens – particularly when many of us aren’t entirely sure what the reason behind the rule really is. For the most part, we silence the devil on our shoulders and comply with the rules, but for anyone still searching for the answer to why phones need to be on airplane mode during a flight, keep reading. www.cntraveller.com/article/the-real-reason-you-cant-use-your-phone-on-a-plane?2023 September
