The Orient Express is resuming its legendary journeys from Paris – and it’s more glamorous than ever The original train is coming back to life in 2024, replete with Art Deco details and opulent suites. Over the past two years, trains have become the transport of choice for a growing number of travellers, both in Europe and the US, thanks to improved services and connections, an emphasis on the environment, and new investments in high-speed rail lines (the EU is aiming to double high-speed rail use by 2030 and triple current levels by 2050). It’s no surprise, then, that a number of train projects and formats are being developed to meet demand, and take the scenic route to a whole new level. The latest? The relaunch of the original Orient Express. The train that forever changed luxury travel almost 140 years ago – it debuted on 4 October 1883 – is being brought back to life by French hospitality group Accor, which uses the Orient Express name under license from SNCF, France’s national train service. Starting in 2024 and just in time for the Paris Olympics, the railroad icon will gear up to resume service from the French capital to the rest of the continent, reviving the same lavish journeys of its heyday. While details and itineraries have yet to be confirmed, it’s likely that some of the routes will end in Istanbul, just as it was for the first Orient Express. The refurbished train is going to be “a dream on wheels,” according to Guillaume de Saint Lager, vice president of the Orient Express. “We are reimagining the Orient Express to create something timeless,” says Saint Lager. “The idea is to present a fantasy: a train that could have been made today or 100 years ago – with the addition of all the contemporary comforts, of course.” ……. www.cntraveller.com/article/the-return-of-the-orient-express#11 August 2022

The 8 best beaches in Crete Our insider guide to the best beaches on Crete, the largest of the Greek islands: where to head for swimming, sunsets and sun-bathing The largest and most populous of the dazzling Greek islands, Crete's coastline is a 1,000km marvel characterised by green hilly terrain, cliff face drops and postcard-perfect swathes of powdery sand. The appeal of the island is clearly not a modern phenomenon, with human settlements traced well over 100,000 years back. Thanks to the Minoan civilisation, Crete became a central part of early Europe's global importance – something later utilised by the Romans, Venitians and Ottomans. Since becoming part of Greece in 1913, the Mediterranean's fifth-largest island has established itself as one of the most popular destinations for a summertime escape thanks to some of the best beaches across the continent and temperatures that linger around the 20s well into the northern hemisphere's autumn. From dramatic stretches of beach that require a picnic bag and lots of legwork to reach, to those closer to the historical sites and the island's best hotels, this is the ultimate guide to the best beaches in Crete. www.cntraveller.com/gallery/best-beaches-in-crete#9 August 2022

The 10 most beautiful places in Yorkshire Including blustery peaks and impressive architecture, these are the prettiest spots in God's Own Country, Yorkshire As someone who is Yorkshire born and bred, I’ll be the first to admit that I may be biased when I say it is the most beautiful region in the country. These Indigenous-Owned Lodges Take Visitors Deep Into British Columbia Expect hot springs, grizzly bear spotting, and plant medicine at these newly-opened eco-resorts.
Standing beneath a towering Douglas fir on the lakeside grounds of Quaaout Lodge & Spa, northeast of Vancouver, B.C., an Indigenous woman named Britt leads me through my first smudging ceremony, a ritual she calls “a bath for your spirit.” To create the cleansing smoke, Britt burns sage and evergreen needles in a pearlescent abalone shell. I close my eyes and inhale the woodsy scent. When it opened three decades ago, Quaaout, which is owned and operated by the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band, part of the Secwépemc First Nation, was an Indigenous tourism pioneer in B.C.. Now interest in these kinds of experiences is booming as travelers seek out authentic, responsible ways to engage with the places they visit. This summer, three more First Nations communities have opened eco-resorts, adding to a solid base of Indigenous-owned businesses throughout the province that includes Salmon n' Bannock Bistro on the coast and long-loved Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort in the Kootenays. www.cntraveler.com/story/these-indigenous-owned-lodges-british-columbia?1 August 2022

These Are the 10 Best Places to Live in the World From quaint Nordic hubs to Canadian cities, these destinations promise a high quality of life.
The idea of moving abroad is always appealing, whether you want to live somewhere with a better quality of living or simply have an insatiable appetite for travel. But where to start? It may help to look at some ironclad data.
Enter the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2022, the latest annual ranking of the best places to live in the world, which scores 172 cities in five categories: Stability, Healthcare, Culture & Entertainment, Education, and Infrastructure. For the past two years, EIU’s rankings have been largely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, with lockdowns and social distancing measures affecting scores for culture, education, and healthcare in cities across the world. The 2022 report seems to signal a return to pre-pandemic trends, although several other factors—particularly Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—have caused some regions to fall in the rankings.
So what exactly are the most livable cities in 2022? Looking at the top 10, metropolises in western Europe and Canada reign supreme—but those in Australia and Japan rank high as well. (And before you even look, be warned that zero U.S. cities made the cut. Again.)
Counting down, here are the 10 best places to live in the world.

What Travelers Should Do to Prepare for Extreme Heat in Europe Trains may be out of service and some tours canceled as the continent's temperatures soar to a blistering 110 degrees.
A sweltering heat wave has been sweeping through Europe in recent days, with extreme temperatures causing treacherous conditions, including everything from airport runway and railroad track damage to wildfires in mountains and surrounding cities.
Record temperatures “have been broken in many places" in Europe, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Joe Curtis. “The new records set in the United Kingdom were particularly notable,” Curtis says, referring to Eastern England's peak of 104.5 degrees Fahrenheit on July 19. “All-time temperature records were not only exceeded, but completely shattered by several degrees in a country where reliable weather records date back more than 150 years."
Thankfully, earlier this week in the U.K., Ireland, and northern France temperatures began to dip. But areas in Portugal, Spain, Italy, and southeastern France are still dealing with ongoing heat and soaring temperatures, according to Curtis.
For travelers, the scorching weather has caused train delays and cancellations as well as stifling conditions in airport terminals on a continent where air conditioning isn't as plentiful—or as strong—as many Americans are accustomed to. "It is usually not U.S.-movie theater style AC where you need a sweater and blanket, but it's cooler inside than outside,” President and Founder of Inside Europe Travel Experiences Sandra Weinacht, who is currently in France, says.
With nearly two months of summer travel time still on the books, here’s what you need to know about how the heat wave is affecting some of the hardest-hit countries in Europe.www.cntraveler.com/story/heat-wave-europe-2022-what-travelers-should-know#22 July 2022

7 places you're most likely to be pickpocketed – and how to avoid it Everything you need to know about keeping you and your valuables safe and secure.
I had always prided myself on not being pickpocketed or robbed at any point on my travels, until I, too, fell victim to a robbery when I was boarding a train from Lyon to Nice in France. When I was on this particular trip to France, I was at the two-and-a-half-month mark of a three-month backpacking holiday. I always had my zippers padlocked to avoid anyone unzipping my bag, I kept my passport, money and valuables attached to my front, and I never wore any jewellery that would make me look like a target. So, how did I get robbed? It’s quite unfortunate really, and I’m not entirely sure there was much I could’ve done to stop it in this instance. But I was getting the train to Nice at 6.00am, I had my large backpack on my back, my small backpack on my front, and I had just bought myself a coffee and a croissant, so my hands were full. Sleep-deprived and totally oblivious to my surroundings, I hopped aboard the train and took off my big backpack at the luggage racks at the beginning of the carriage. I walked to my seat to put down my coffee and croissant, went back to the luggage racks, and my bag was gone. I ran to the platform and between carriages, but it was nowhere to be seen. Thirty seconds is all it took for them to take everything I had (luckily I kept my valuables on my front, though).www.internationaltraveller.com/europe/hotspots-for-being-pickpocketed/?15 August 2022

82932 83200 The Best Weekend Getaways in New England, From the Rhode Island Coast to Rural Vermont Whether you're looking for foliage destinations for fall or summertime escapes on the water. Whether you're based on the East Coast or traveling further, the best weekend getaways in New England promise a few things: easy access from major hubs in the region, serious small-town charm, and a range of activities depending on the season. Come autumn, an explosion of red and orange takes over the region's pastoral landscapes, drawing travelers to ogle the trees everywhere from Connecticut to Vermont. In winter, maple syrup flows, and snow drapes rural mountain villages. Summer is peak season for weekend getaways in New England—who wants to stay cooped up at home when the sun is shining?—whether you're in search of lobster rolls in Maine or hoping to rack up miles on upstate New York trails. While there are no shortage of great places for a quick and easy adventure in the area, there are a few weekend getaways in New England that we're especially fond of, all within a few hours of cities like New York and Boston. They're all relatively underrated as well—these aren't the Hamptons of the world—so you can spend less time fighting for a B&B reservation and more time unwinding. Read on for our eight easy New England escapes. www.cntraveler.com/gallery/best-weekend-getaways-in-new-england#17 August 2022
