The Top 25 Islands in the World ~ Travel & Leisure This year’s World’s Best Awards survey closed on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were implemented as a result of COVID-19. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your trips to come — whenever they may be.
Turquoise water, fine-sand beaches, palm trees — when we think about islands, it’s often the castaway sort that comes to mind. Something tiny and tropical, even Gilligan-esque.
But the best islands in the world are far more diverse than that. Certainly many of them boast balmy climates, including Bora-Bora (No. 25), Mauritius (No. 6), and Kauai (No. 24). But still others have vineyards instead of palm trees, castles instead of rustic huts, and (unsurprisingly) some very appealing resorts.
Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, Travel + Leisure asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

Read on for the full list of the best islands in the world, according to T+L readers, who again voted Palawan into the No. 1 spot.

Sea creatures: the driftwood sculptures bringing joy to Australian beaches during the pandemic – in pictures Artist Pete Rush impulsively made a simple horse sculpture on a Terrigal beach from natural materials – the response from locals was so positive, it inspired him to create a seaside menagerie that includes horses and megafauna. Rush doesn’t use any wire or string in his work, just driftwood, flax and seaweed, and he tries not to disturb natural vegetation. To avoid attracting a crowd of onlookers during a time of physical distancing, he works mostly at night. ‘In the end, it’s a bit of fun in shit times,’ the Central Coast artist says of his sculptures, many of which are reclaimed by the ocean www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2020/aug/10/sea-creatures-the-driftwood-animal-sculptures-bringing-joy-to-central-coast-beaches-during-the-pandemic-in-pictures

Wild weather: NSW battered by flooding and howling winds – in pictures Heavy rains caused flooding and three evacuation orders on the New South Wales south coast over the past three days as howling winds and damaging surf battered much of the state’s coastline. Damaging winds with gusts of more than 90km/h were recorded along the Sydney and Illawarra coast, reaching 93km/h at Norah Head on the Central Coast. Waves also peaked at just over five metres in Sydney with much of the coastline from Ulladulla to Port Macquarie warned of hazardous surf. Heavy rains caused flooding with the Shoalhaven River at Nowra peaking at 4.13m on Monday – its highest level since 1991.
• NSW weather: flooding eases on south coast but many residents yet to return home
