3 ~~~ A Five-Day Road Trip Through Central Baja's Artsy Towns and Pristine Beaches A meander through the less-explored central peninsula shows a different side of the region. For decades, Cabo San Lucas has been the magnet of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, luring sybarites and adventurers to the peninsula's southernmost tip with its high-end resorts and world-class sportfishing and surf breaks. But those who seek a smaller, sleepier Baja town have begun heading north to Loreto. With increased direct flights from Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Dallas, the little colonial city is a great jumping-off point for a drive exploring the state's untrodden beaches, wildlife-rich marine parks, and artsy desert towns. www.cntraveler.com/story/a-five-day-road-trip-through-central-bajas-artsy-towns-and-pristine-beaches#4 October 2021

6 ~~~ The Best Spots for Whale Watching in the U.S. ~ Conde Nast ~~~ From Hawaii's Big Island to Provincetown, Massachusetts, these are the places to whale watch stateside. While the United States is home to a bastion of iconic animals—the American bison, the grizzly bear, and the bald eagle, to name a few—some of the earth’s most fascinating mammals can be spotted just beyond the sea shore. From the remote reaches of Alaska to the coastal waters of Virginia, a wealth of unique whale species roam the open ocean, perfectly positioning themselves for viewing. While international travel remains off the table, a domestic whale watching trip is no less rewarding (and for Americans who live on a coast, great viewing spots are never far). As the seasons change, temperatures flux in tandem, and countless cetaceans embark on lengthy migrations across the globe, there’s always something new and exciting to watch for in the world of whales. 7 ~~~ When to Visit U.S. National Parks for Free in 2021 ~ Conde Nast ~~~ Get access to Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon for free on these special days. In 2020, with international travel mostly on pause, Americans flocked to national parks. According to National Park Service data, Yellowstone National Park saw record numbers with a 20 percent increase in visits in September 2020 compared to 2019. As of November, its total 2020 numbers are down just 5 percent compared to 2019. Point Reyes National Seashore in northern California also had a banner summer that's continued into the fall, with 39 percent more visits in November than the same month in 2019. While overall visitor numbers are still down across most parks, the trend of discovering America's natural wonders—and in many cases, our own backyards—seems primed to continue well into 2021. www.cntraveler.com/story/free-us-national-parks-days-2021 ~ 8 December 2020 ~

8 ~~~Canada's Rocky Mountaineer Train is heading to Colorado & Utah ~~~ The luxury train line is bringing its signature service and glass-domed train cars to the American Southwest. Canada’s famed glass-domed luxury rail operator has some good news for 2021: For the first time, Rocky Mountaineer is bringing its train journeys to the American Southwest for a standalone U.S. adventure. For two days, passengers aboard the new ‘Rockies To The Red Rocks’ route will ride from Denver to Moab, Utah, with an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The train will voyage along the Colorado River, passing through steep rock canyons and breathtaking desert scenes along the way. While this new route won’t be the first time Rocky Mountaineer has operated in the U.S., it is the first standalone route in the country, as well as its first time outside the Pacific Northwest. Rocky Mountaineer previously ran a route called Coastal Passage from 2014 to 2019, which included a one-day journey from Seattle to Vancouver that went on to connect to one of two longer Canadian routes. For the past several years, the Canadian train operator has been searching for a new route that shares similar features with its routes in Western Canada, namely incredible scenery and iconic destinations. “This region, with its magnificent scenery, national parks, vast opportunities to explore, will delight millions,” says Peter Armstrong, founder of Rocky Mountaineer. www.cntraveler.com/story/canadas-rocky-mountaineer-train-is-heading-to-colorado-and-utah ~ 7 December 2020 ~

11 ~~~ 7 Black History Museums Across the U.S. Worth Visiting ~ Conde Nast ~~~ These museums are dedicated to local heroes and legends. I’ve been brought to tears during strolls through the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, D.C., and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, as I absorbed story after story of my people’s struggle, pain, and triumphs. I’ve discovered smaller museums with big stories to share, where you’ll rarely have to worry about crowds. 16 ~~~ Beyond the resorts, Colorado’s lesser-known mountain towns are the next big destinations ~ Matador Network ~~~
A KAYAKER RIPS through a stretch of whitewater, using a rapid to invert herself into a twist before realigning and paddling downstream. On the side of the river, a small group of onlookers cheers the move. Some are locals stopping for a mid-ride rest while pedaling their bicycles across Colorado’s Vail Valley. Others are visitors from Denver, witnessing freestyle kayaking for the first time.
This sounds like any summer Saturday in the popular resort towns of Vail or Breckenridge — but it’s actually the small town of Eagle, 30 miles west of Vail. There, Eagle River Park is a new whitewater park developed as a destination for river runners and spectators on a stretch of the Eagle River. Eagle, a town of 7,000 residents, has long been a bedroom community for retirees, resort workers, and others wanting to live in the mountains but not within the often over-fabricated — and very expensive — grasp of resort communities.

26 ~~~ These Inns Are Redefining the Catskills ~ Conde Nast Traveler ~~~ The sleepy southwestern corner of the Catskills is a getaway fit for these times. From afar, my wife, Dana, and I must have looked like hotel guests in a huff. We were striding across the grass, arms pumping, as though off to report some customer-service outrage to the manager. In fact, we were on a pre-breakfast fitness walk—step one of our wellness regimen at Kenoza Hall, a new boutique resort in New York's southwestern Catskills. 27 ~~~ 50 States, 50 Cuisines: The Food Worth Traveling For in Every State ~ Conde Nast ~~~ Think of this as the ultimate food-inspired road trip. Two years ago we set out to identify a signature dish for each state, from Sonoran dogs in Arizona to cheese curds in Wisconsin. For the second iteration of this list, we wanted to go beyond the classics—the food everyone tells you to try when you visit—and highlight chefs and cuisines that have had a distinct impact or reflect a noteworthy community in the state. We looked at all 50 states (plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico) and their unique food histories, debating our choice for each on impassioned Zoom calls and lengthy Slack threads. The final result is a list of state-specific cuisines, each based on a longstanding diaspora (like Vietnamese food in Louisiana), an Indigenous community (Abenaki in Vermont), or something totally endemic (New Mexican in New Mexico). Our goal was to highlight a cuisine worth traveling to each state for, much of which you truly can’t get anywhere else. In some cases, it was so hard to choose that we included an honorable mention. At a time when much of the travel we’re doing is domestic and road-trip-based, it feels apt to celebrate America’s varied food cultures—and maybe even discover a little something about our home states along the way. www.cntraveler.com/story/50-states-50-cuisines ~ 14 September 2020 ~

28 ~~~ 14 Fall Vacations to Take This Year ~ Conde Nast ~~~ You don't have to go far for a change of scenery. We understand the impulse to hunker down in the fall—crisper temperatures and sweaters just pulled out of storage beg for weekends spent cozying up inside. But fall is a great time to plan a getaway, whether that looks like a long weekend at a cabin or a road trip designed to burn up the vacation days you didn't use this summer. The weather's ideal from the Northeast to Texas; seasonal produce is rejuvenating outdoor dining menus; and the changing of leaves is enough to make the cynics among us want to hit the roads and ogle. The summer crowds have also thinned, meaning you can more comfortably visit well-loved spots without the stress of unexpected mass gatherings. With a little research (namely, into local travel restrictions and CDC recommendations), an assessment of your personal comfort zone, and a bit of travel inspo (see below), there's a trip for everyone this season. Iceland and Norway may dazzle with northern-lights displays, but you don’t have to go abroad to enjoy a night beneath auroras. These kaleidoscopic swirls dance above the U.S.’s northernmost states—and we’re not just talking about northern-lights hunting in Alaska.
If and when the conditions are right, you can catch auroras in most northern-border states such as Maine or Montana. And catching the lights here isn’t merely a pipe dream: In early October 2021, northern lights painted the skies from New Hampshire to Glacier National Park. One month before that, aurora hunters caught them in North Dakota. And they danced as low as Muskegon, Michigan, in the spring.
Aurora experts say there’s more where that came from. The sun sparks northern lights during solar storms, when it emits charged particles that collide with Earth’s atmosphere, creating the glowing green, purple, and even red displays that top travelers’ bucket lists. In December 2019, the sun entered a new cycle of solar activity—and this transition bodes well for those eager to spot auroras.
“The solar cycle is associated with an increase in solar activity,” says Mike Shaw, an astrophotographer and co-founder of the annual Aurora Summit. Each solar cycle is roughly 11 years long; the mid-point, roughly five years in, is the peak of northern-lights activity, known as solar maximum. “A new cycle correspondingly increases aurora activity, so the next several years will be much better than the last several years,” Shaw says.www.cntraveler.com/story/where-to-see-the-northern-lights-in-the-contiguous-united-states#27 October 2021
