~~~ 10 of the prettiest towns in the UK The top 10 UK towns that stand out for their beauty Dotted across the UK are those impossibly pretty towns that haven’t let their twisting streets lure them into a time warp or succumb to the provincial trap of identikit shops and faceless cafés. There’s a buzz about them; the chance to get a good cup of coffee and unearth a hidden treasure in their hotchpotch of shops. But these are also the kind of places where you can take a hefty gulp of fresh air: beyond their streets are gently rolling hills, alluring bays or towering mountains ready to be climbed when you’ve mustered the energy. www.cntraveller.com/gallery/prettiest-towns-uk#26 September 2021
~~~ Things to do in York Street food, cycle tours, green spaces and ghost tours in the historic walled city The historic city of York has to come at the top of any list of must-see cities in the UK. Its long history as a Roman and then Viking settlement provides handsomely mismatched surroundings alongside upmarket establishments and grand structures, and the city is tinged with an undercurrent of the quirky and the strange, attracting ghost hunters, hippies and students. It’s only two hours by train from London to York’s beautiful Victorian station – once there you don’t need a car to get around – and the city is overflowing with tempting ventures to fill your time, whether for a weekend or longer. From the historical to the very modern, these are the best things to do in this exciting, vibrant city. www.cntraveller.com/article/things-to-do-york#12 September 2021

~~~ Why Oxford should be your next staycation spot ~~~ Oxford puts the classics in classic. Yet recent additions are moving the story on. Alexander Fiske-Harrison retraces his university days and discovers new exciting hangouts I have a fondness for smaller cities. Compared to the great metropolises, they are more discrete, more human in their scale. They are also often built upon a single resource. One thinks of Salzburg, with its salt mines, or Seville, which hosted all the gold of the Americas. Oxford is the most human of all, though, as it is built on the very commodity which puts the sapiens into Homo sapiens. Here, they mined wisdom. I remember my own sense of awe when I arrived as an undergraduate in the mid-1990s – first as a biology student under one of Kenya’s greatest ecologists, and then studying philosophy under a tutor whose own tutor could trace a direct line, tutor to tutor, back to Immanuel Kant himself. I remember how, in the warm autumn sun, the university buildings stood like vast stone-clad thrones for the human mind – their distinctive golden colour coming from the ancient coral reefs that fossilised to form the limestone deposits of nearby Headington. www.cntraveller.com/gallery/staycation-oxford?11 December 2021
~~~ This magical treehouse hideaway might just be the coolest stay in London ~~~ We take a look inside this Shoreditch penthouse that you can rent on Plum Guide
“No time for average” is the catchy motto for Plum Guide, a holiday home rental site with high standards – just three per cent of homes that apply for listings in each destination featured on the site are granted the Plum Award. And indeed, this far-from-average London listing was so intriguing on the website, we had to see it in person to truly believe it. A treehouse? In Shoreditch? With a swing? And a piano? The Shoreditch Treehouse may be less a home and more a hotspot for hosting secret gigs and lavish parties, but it also makes for an incredible place to stay in London.www.cntraveller.com/gallery/shoreditch-treehouse?6 August 2022

~~~ 5 secret, pretty places to visit in Cumbria Where to explore beyond the Lake District Nobody is questioning Wordsworth’s verity when he wrote of the Lake District as being the “loveliest spot that man hath ever found.” The problem is that – in peak summer season at least – far too many people are straining their cars around the narrow lanes of the National Park area to confirm that he was right. We love Beatrix Potter’s humble home, Lake Windermere and even the Derwent Pencil Museum isn’t as dull as you might think. But there are huge swathes of Cumbria, particularly around the coastal areas, that hit beatific heights every bit as poetic as Wordsworth’s paeans to the region, but where there are almost no crowds at all to swerve. Here are five of our favourite, lesser-known spots. www.cntraveller.com/gallery/places-to-visit-in-cumbria#27 August 2022
~~~ The best country house hotels in the UK These bucolic sanctuaries have refurbished and returned to their youthful glory, while finding a way to marry with our very modern expectations of rural respite We might not be able to claim year-round sun and over-water villas are certainly thin on the ground, but when it comes to country houses, nowhere on the planet can match the calibre of the biscuit-hued boltholes that pepper the British countryside. Still a tonic to urban life, these grand houses were once the private homes of illustrious families but now proudly open their doors to a much more varied guest list. Whether you’re on the hunt for a Bridgerton-inspired break (sans aggressive game of Pall Mall, perhaps) or keen to flit from fireside to poolside without hassle, we’ve picked out the cream of the crop when it comes to country houses in the UK. 19 ~~~ The best holiday destinations in October Our 30 favourite places to visit in autumn October can be many things. It can be the dreamy scent of bonfire smoke on restorative air; pumpkins on porches; blazing leaves. Or, Down Under, it might be the abundance of spring – and a fine time to explore new Aussie cooking. In much of Asia, rains and humidity are abating, so both riotous cities and off-grid escapes are at their best. And with the steamy, congested summer a distant memory, it’s the savvy traveller’s time for a classic California road trip, or an in-demand beach break. 20 ~~~ The best destinations to visit via Eurostar Historic sights, exquisite European fare and indulgent hotel stays. You can have it all within a few hours in these destinations – without even heading to an airport When we were young, boarding a train – hand clutching that of our parents – felt like the beginning of a magical experience. We were enamoured by the size of its wheels, by the undulating countryside that whipped past the windows and that familiar squeak of the trolley, laden with a smorgasbord of snacks. In short, a rail journey when we were mere children felt like the destination in and of itself. Even if we’d have just landed back at the same station we’d set off from, we’d be happy. And though we are now less enchanted by the gentle chug of the vessel, travelling by train still manages to retain its charm; it’s often eco-friendly, it’s comfortable and you hardly ever need to queue to check your bags in. The crucial difference now? We do care about the destination. Which is why, when it comes to taking a long-distance trip across Europe, the Eurostar’s myriad stops are too enticing to resist. As we make our way through historic towns and across beautiful countryside at a leisurely pace, the rare chance to watch everyday life unfold outside the window – sans the stress of passport control – only prefices the excitement of the holiday to come. So, in an ode to the glorious freedom of train travel, we’ve rounded-up some of our favourite destinations to visit via Eurostar this year and beyond. As Richard Ratliff said, “the journey has its own lyrics, a duet of balanced motion, the rails and wheels in tune.” www.cntraveller.com/gallery/best-eurostar-destinations#3 September 2022

~~~ The Midlands are the new Cotswolds and 8 other ways UK holidays are set to change How will we push the frontiers of the staycation in the future? We delve into 9 trends that will change the way we holiday in the UK Camping will be Airbnb.2 Hikers of a certain persuasion get misty-eyed about the Mass Trespass of 1932, when hob-nailed ramblers invaded the slopes of Kinder Scout in the Peak District demanding greater access to the countryside. Huge swathes of the UK are, sadly, still closed off to everyday folks, but a new kitbag of camping start-ups is unlocking acres of private estates, fields and back gardens so we can pitch up, peg down and roll out our canvases – or motorhomes – with few others around. Wild With Consent, which connects the #vanlife community with friendly landowners across the moors of Northumberland, adds off-grid sites in the south-west, including farms within the Dark Sky Reserve of Exmoor. Those with a tent, meanwhile, should direct their compass points at two other platforms that encourage private hosts to open up their land (while covering the all-important insurance): Wildpoint, which launched in 2021, and Hipcamp, the US-born Airbnb of camping spots, which this year bought out UK-based Cool Camping. Both feature small sites, but the first-timers point the way forward, with spaces from orchards to vineyards and a farm in the Cotswolds that only allows a single tent at a time to pitch up on its rolling fields. The ideal place to unpack the guitar and play some Woody Guthrie – just don’t expect a hot tub. www.cntraveller.com/article/uk-holidays-future#7 September 2022
~~~ Unexpected things that will happen in London now the Queen has died A round-up of both the traditional and more left-field events that will take place in London during the period of national mourning, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II Wherever you might be, in London or beyond, by now you will have been made aware of the once-in-our-lifetime news: Queen Elizabeth II has died. The historic, record-breaking and most well-travelled British monarch passed away on Thursday 8 September 2022, in Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. ‘Operation London Bridge’, the code name for the extremely detailed funeral plans, originally devised in the 1960s by royals and government officials, has now been enacted, and, as its name suggests, revolves around London. On Thursday, a black sign was pinned to the Buckingham Palace gates by a footman, and overnight thousands gathered there to lay flowers, letters and candles, and pay their final respects to the longest-running royal ruler of modern times. Here are all the things that are set to take place in the city, with some elements you may not expect. www.cntraveller.com/article/unexpected-things-happen-london-queen-dies#10 September 2022
