The South East Gippsland dairy farming town of Yarram has received a colourful street art makeover, with the addition of 10 new public art murals by renowned street artist ‘Heesco’.
The ‘Heesco Town’ project in Yarram, Victoria, came about when artist, filmmaker, and owner of the Bull Bar and Gallery, Wayne Tindall commissioned the popular street artist to decorate his establishment with some thematic wall art.
Seeing the potential of Heesco’s murals to draw attention to the greater township, Yarram identity and project underwriter Eric Greenaway suggested commissioning Heesco to paint more murals on some of the privately-owned buildings across the town.
Born in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia, Heesco has evolved to become a ‘rockstar’ of the graffiti and street art since migrating to Australia in 1999.
With a growing body of laneway art across Melbourne and Sydney, wheat silo murals in Weethalle and Grenfell in NSW and Koroonda in SA, the highly sort after artist’ talent has taken him to Mexico, New York, Sweden and back to his homeland of Mongolia to create public murals.
Business owners and building custodians from Yarram soon got on board with the Heesco Town project, proposing their custom made mural ideas, which would collectively tell the story of Yarram. The five-week project resulted in depictions of local historical figures, heritage scenes, fantasy scenes, and depictions of rural life from the area.
It is believed that the Heesco Town mural trail will add a further drawcard to South Gippsland alongside a developing tourist trail which includes local attractions such as Wilson’s Promontory, Port Albert, Tarra Bulga National Park, the 90-mile beach and Agnes Falls.
