June 7: Europe Awaits!
5:30 p.m. PT / 8:30 p.m. ET | REGISTER
7:00 p.m. PT / 10:00 p.m. ET | REGISTER
This special edition of Monday Night Travel sets up Rick’s brand-new, two-hour public television special, Europe Awaits — which airs on public television across the US the same evening. (Tonight’s MNT will be just 60 minutes long in hopes that you can catch the show on TV, check your local listings). Our theme: places that are good for your soul to visit post-COVID — destinations where you can connect with charming cultures and engrossing nature on your own terms. Visiting all different destinations but in the same countries featured in the TV special, Rick will explain the post-COVID appeal of these places: Santorini, with its dramatic white-washed towns perched cliff-side as if designed to catch the sunset; Mount Etna, where you can climb an active volcano and witness the power of nature; Nazaré, where you can "go local," Portuguese-style, in the home of the world’s biggest and most prized surf; the hill towns of Italy, where you can find that perfect corner to keep your head above the flood of the 21st century; Bucharest, Romania’s bold and virtually unknown capital city; and Dartmoor, a land of stony reminders of civilizations past and wild ponies loping through the mist. For dinner, Rick will be enjoying some Italian classics: bruschetta, Caprese salad, and an Aperol spritz.

Celebrate Bastille Day — one month ahead of the French — with Rick and his co-host (and France guidebook co-author), Steve Smith, on a virtual tour around France. We'll check out France's second city, the tragically underrated culinary capital of Lyon, before exploring the châteaux of Vaux-le-Vicomte and Cheverny. In the Dordogne, Sarlat hosts a thriving market—one of France's best. And in the sunbaked South of France, we explore the urbane resort of Nice and the Roman temple and arena in the city of Nîmes. For dinner, we'll have a gourmet charcuterie board of French meats, cheeses, and tapenade from Le Pichet, a local Seattle restaurant, and a bottle of French wine. Get your own French takeout and join us for this Bastille Day party.

June 21: Celebrating Europe’s Artisans
5:30 p.m. PT / 8:30 p.m. ET | REGISTER
7:00 p.m. PT / 10:00 p.m. ET | REGISTER
In Europe, so many things are done with artisanal care. Join Rick in meeting a wide variety of Europeans who bring this pride and attention to detail to their own little slice of the world: Cesare, the coppersmith of Montepulciano; the Dutch, whose art is farming tulips and creating new land by reclaiming it from under the sea; Stanway House in England's Cotswolds, where the eccentric Earl of Wemyss builds a towering homemade geyser; Swiss cheesemakers in the high Alps; and an entire street of artisans in Bulgaria's Veliko Tarnovo. Then we’ll zip down to Egypt to enjoy the lovable chaos of merchants and artisans. To accompany our virtual journey, Rick will be enjoying some finely crafted French foods: pâté, cheese, baguette, and wine from Bordeaux.

Europe’s Eccentric Art ~ www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/travel-classes/monday-night-travel/europes-eccentric-art
This event was recorded on May 31 2021.
Europe is packed with world-famous art treasures…but for a change of pace, join Rick for a virtual tour of some of Europe's more offbeat art. We'll start with a poignant Swiss collection of untrained artists whom society considered "insane." In Oslo, we ogle Gustav Vigeland's evocative statues at Frogner Park and get to know the screaming art of Edvard Munch. In France, we'll learn about belle-époque Paris and tour Chartres Cathedral's Gothic architecture with guide extraordinaire Malcolm Miller. We'll visit Salvador Dalí's bizarre home in Catalunya, which is just as wild as his Surrealist art. Then, for a stimulating dose of Slavic art, we'll venture to Bulgaria's Rila Monastery and Croatia's Museum of Naive Art in Zagreb. And we'll finish with the fairytale castles of Bavaria's "Mad" King Ludwig.
