1 ~~~ Taking an international flight during the coronavirus pandemic is a strange new experience For the first time in my life, I got an entire row of seats to myself.(ABC News: Michael Rowland)
The lack of traffic on the drive into Melbourne Airport was the first giveaway.
Even on weekends, the road outside the terminals is usually a hot mess of cars, vans, buses and taxis jostling for position.
On the day I arrived to catch a connecting flight to Sydney for my trip to the US, there was barely a vehicle to be seen.
The security guard, who on a normal day would be busy monitoring the drop-off frenzy, welcomed the novelty of having someone to say hello to.
The airport reflected the economic devastation inflicted by the pandemic.
The Virgin terminal was boarded up from the outside, the international check-in counters were closed, and the cafes and restaurants where you would go for a pre-flight coffee or snack stood empty.
