1 ~~~ 'I found my late mother's travel diary recounting a family cycling tour of Europe in 1933' ~~~ The following is an edited version of Marion Littler’s travel diary, which describes a cycling tour of Europe taken with her father in 1933. The words of Marion, who was 19 at the time, provide a touching (and often amusing) insight into the strong bond that existed between the intrepid pair, and a fascinating snapshot of interwar Europe. They also prove that, while nearly 90 years have passed since the four-week trip, some things never change for travellers on the Continent – from the overcharging of tourists, to the difficulty of finding decent food.
Alan Duncalf – Marion’s son – shared the diary with us. Marion died in 2008 at the age of 94. www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/articles/Europe-by-bike-in-1933/
