Hi Tulips, The link doesn't appear to be working. When I click on it, it just brings me back to your post.

Well...I just did Cairo to London so I lucked out. I would not want my laptop in my luggage...but at least everything important is in the cloud.

Ugh! Nooooooooooo! I'm flying Dubai to Toronto in October. The only good thing is that I have to pick up my luggage in Dubai so I can switch up my luggage there....but the thought of putting $5000 worth of electronics into my checked luggage is disturbing. I'll be researching the options at the Dubai airport including wrapping the bag in plastic if it comes down to that. Hopefully, AC will come up with a routine to check the bag at the ramp. I hear some airlines are doing that. And all this increases the risk from lithium ion batteries. Right now, they are required to be carried on because of the risk of fire.

I'd prefer gate checking as well.
I've never understood Saran wrapping luggage as that won't stop a thief, but then, neither will suitcase locks and yet I use those.
A Pelican case might gphelp prevent damage from luggage being tossed around.

Yeah, I think the plastic isn't so much as a surefire way to prevent theft but is a way to dissuade thieves. Baggage handlers only have limited time to steal if they're into it, so they'll go for the simple opportunities like unlocked bags and ignore the locked plastic wrapped ones which would take time and leave zero doubt that they were tampered with. And if there is no gate check, then everyone would have to check their electronics for these flights and mine wouldn't be the only one with stuff in it. Hopefully, the airport would have extra security on the luggage going on these flights. I wonder if lenses would be included in the ban. Hmmm...

Emirates Cuts Flights, Cites Travel Restrictions. Will Other Airlines?
Emirates has announced it will reduce service between Dubai and almost half its destinations in the U.S. Flights to Boston, Seattle, and Los Angeles will be reduced from two per day to one, and daily flights to Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale will be reduced to five per week each. The total number of weekly flights cut comes to 25.
