We have just come back from a week in London. We enjoyed it very much. It was very cold while we were away, -20C or more, below 0F for Americans. DH was worried about the house if one of the furnaces would fail etc, but everything was ok and a friend checked the house every day. The weather in London was warm for us 10 to 12C.
We went on WestJet plus from Calgary, which is quite a bit more than regular economy, but we had a great deal. There are only 24 seats there on a Boeing767. It was -25C on the evening we were leaving which might have impacted our departure. We left more than 4 hours late. Calgary's airport has been totally rebuilt and was quite different. The international area is very large and you no longer sit by your gate. Coming home it was very fast and efficient.
We really liked the Plus seats, they were wider and we had lots of legroom, we are both tall and find we can't sit in the ever tighter economy seats. The service and food reminded me of overseas flights 30-40 years ago. The food and wine(poured from a large bottle) were good, real dishes and glasses were used and stainless steel cutlery. We also had a blanket and a pillow, which i think you have to pay for in economy. In economy there is no food included but you can pre order for a fee. The flight takes about 9 hours going east and 9.5 hours westbound.
We landed at Gatwick North and had to take a short train ride to the South terminal. We purchased return tickets for the Gatwick Express, which goes to Victoria station.
We bought the Oyster card at information at Victoria Station. I am not sure what kind of card we got, travel is fairly expensive. We told them what we wanted to do, so he loaded our card with 8 days travel and then added train travel to Hampton Court and entrance tickets.
We stayed at an aparthotel that I found through Booking.com near Earls Court Tube station. We took the tube with our luggage, many stations have lifts but not Victoria station.
