1 ~~~ The unknown Patagonia - South America ~~~ *** The south is a real place. His other name is Patagonia. Its secret name is not spelled, but is revealed in a rich collection of fjords and forests, glaciers and glacial lakes, winds that polish the skies and sweep the pampas, an almost wild space inhabited by few people and many surprises. ***

5 ~~~ How to Travel to Patagonia ~ Travel and Leisure ~~~ Here's everything you need to know about visiting Patagonia, including the best treks and places to stay. Southern Patagonia, which stretches across Chile and Argentina, has long lured travelers to what is very nearly the end of the world with its storied peaks carved by age-old glaciers and spellbinding landscapes. Here, in the countries' national parks, are snow-capped mountains, cobalt fjords, and old-growth forests. At the southernmost tip of the Americas, icebergs rupture with a dramatic roar from ancient, massive glaciers. Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park are the region’s top highlights, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. For a complete Patagonian travel journey, combine visits to both halves of the region. Of course, doing so requires a lot of logistical planning — especially during the high season. Here’s a comprehensive tip sheet to help you maximize your travels in this remote corner of the planet. www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/how-to-travel-to-patagonia?Updated: 31 August 2022

6 ~~~ The Best Way to Experience Patagonia, According to a Travel Expert Patagonia is the place that bucket lists were made for. Stretching across the southern tip of both Chile and Argentina, Patagonia is rugged, sparsely populated, and astonishingly beautiful. Vast plains are crisscrossed by puma and guanaco trails, Andean condors’ with their 10-foot wingspans sometimes circle 40 feet above your head, there are ancient glaciers to sail to and old-growth forests to explore. Getting there is hardly a walk in the park and the weather is notoriously unpredictable — pack layers and be ready to be flexible—but, having just returned from the End of the World, I can say this: It is not only worth the journey, it is on my list of places to visit again. www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/patagonia-travel-tipsMay 2019

7 ~~~ Everything You Need to Know to Trek Patagonia's Torres del Paine Considering how beautiful this corner of the world is, planning a backpacking adventure here is worth the effort. As we crested the rise of John Gardner Pass, our breath was taken away — and not just from Patagonia's famous fierce wind. Below us lay the eight-mile expanse of Grey Glacier spread out like an icy sea. Its big toe trailed icebergs into Grey Lake, its head disappeared up the valley in a wash of light, and a rainbow graced its far side. We were, quite literally, struck with wonder. It was day three of an eight-day trek on the O Circuit in Torres del Paine, the Chilean national park famous for its iconic skyline. It's also quickly becoming known for its multi-day O Circuit (and the shorter front side of the circuit called the W Trek) as a way for more adventurous tourists to see the park. The W Trek may get all the glory for being the shorter version of the full circuit and thus easier to plan and access — but with campsites set in storybook-beautiful locations, cozy refugios where you can buy a bottle of wine and a three-course meal, and a double dose of drool-worthy scenery, hiking the full O Circuit is far and away worth the extra effort to plan. To make your trip planning easy, here's everything you need to know. The biggest tip: Start planning now for a trip from December to March to ensure you get the reservations you want. Alternatively, aim for the quieter shoulder months of November or April, when the weather is still good and the park is relatively empty. www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/nature-travel/torres-del-paine-patagonia-trekUpdated: May 2022
