Whereas some others might not like the idea of being that close to water.

I'm making a trip back home to New Zealand in April and hopefully back to Germany, Switzerland & Austria for the Christmas Markets and for New Years

Bet, I can’t wait to hear about both of your trips. New Zealand is on m list of places to go, and, as you know, I want to go on a Christmas Market’s tour some day. You’ll have to tell us about it when you get back. What a great way to spend New Year’s! While early December is not a good time for me to travel, I would be able to go away during New Year’s, and I should look into a Christmas Market’s tour around that time of the year.

Tiffany - I'm looking forward to it, there's a real unique atmosphere when the Christmas markets are on. I've been researching my options but have to wait a few more months before the winter brochures are released and of course I have to get my leave from work approved too

I'm hoping my leave does get approved, I have already put in for it so I just have to wait and see. I have worked every Christmas/New Year the last several years so I'm due to have it off, unfortunately there are many changes at work. Christmas is nothing special over here for me being summer and having no kids and why I find a traditional european christmas so appealing.

How long do you have to wait for approval Bet? At my office, they won’t even look at vacation requests for Christmas until the end of November, unless there are special circumstances. They would approve a vacation request for Christmas early if you’re booking a big trip, unless it was a regular thing. I love Christmas and almost always take time off to go up north and visit my family. Since you never take time off over the holidays, and you are planning a trip, they should give it to you. Keep us posted.

Less than a week to go before leaving for my cruise, and I can’t wait! It’s been a very stressful month for me, and I’m in need of a break.

Well Tiffany, a cruise is a pretty good cure for stress. It's almost 12 months since our first cruise (South Pacific) and I'd jump at the chance to do it again. Have a great time!

Thanks everyone. I’m almost packed and having a hard time keeping my suitcase under weight. When I go to an all-inclusive resort, I usually wear bathing suites and wraps during the day, and only need clothing for the evenings, but on a cruise, you need casual clothes for the day (unless you decide to skip the excursions and hang out by the pool all day, which I won’t be doing), and you need dressy clothes for the evening. Two of our dinners are cocktail/formal attire, so I need two cocktail dresses for those dinners, and you still have to dress up a bit for the other dinners. You don’t need to go fancy, but I was told no shorts, jeans or casual shoes/sandals. I like dressing up, so wearing the clothes isn’t an issue for me. It’s finding the room in my suitcase to bring them all! I’ve already cut back on my shoes, and may have to cut back on a few more items before leaving!
I’ve already set up my cruise tale, and will write something when I get back. I’ll also post some pictures once I get them organized. As of now, the weather looks good with a chance of rain during one day. I’m hoping it stays that way.

Sounds similar to the 'rules' on our cruise, Tiffany. Meals in the main dining room required a better standard of dress - smart casual. But we also had a couple of formal nights where I had to wear a suit and tie (& Mrs Oz an evening dress). The cruise paperwork hinted that men should wear a dinner suit (tuxedo) and bow tie which sounded overly formal to me. I do have one, and I like to wear it, but on a south seas cruise when you've planned to take just a small 'cabin luggage' case?
I cheated on that one, taking just a long-sleeved shirt, tie, trousers and black shoes. It worked fine because it was so warm that any of the men wearing jackets soon removed them after arriving at their tables. Mrs Oz packed two light evening dresses and some high heels. As it turned out, we fitted in well - nearly everyone wore similar clothing.
The big hazard with cruise ships is that it's incredibly easy to overeat - the food is fantastic, and plenty of it. That worried me because a couple of friends warned me that they had put on 7kg on cruises. Mrs Oz and I tried really hard to avoid this, but still added 1.5kg. The good news was that we spoke with the ship's gymnasium manager who showed us how to lose weight by increasing our metabolic rate. Following his diet suggestions immediately after the cruise, we each lost 10kg in the following ten weeks - and it was incredibly easy. If you have any need for these hints after your cruise, just ask and I can guide you through it all.

Well I guess cruising is out for me. I don't own a formal dress or heeled shoes. My idea of formal wear is dress slacks instead of jeans. My tops are usually sweat shirts and golf shirts but on occasion I dress up and put on a cotton blouse. Guess I would not be welcomed on a cruise. The fact that I could readily afford a cruise would I guess not come into question but not being very classy I would stand out to say the least. Sorry but it seems that if I take any more trips it will have to be self designed as to not embarrass my fellow travellers. At eighty and bull-headed Irish I'm not about to change to suit other folks expectations. Purvis

Actually, it's not like that at all, Purvis. Cruise ships usually have a main dining room, plus other specialty restaurants and cafes. The formal evening wear normally only applies to the main dining room (and only on a couple of nights), not the more casual eateries. You would feel quite comfortable in what you usually wear.
For a more sedate method of travel than 'hustle-bustle' guided tours, a cruise ship might just be what you'd enjoy.

I endorse Oz's remarks, Purvis!
Dress is very optional on all cruises these days. The very formal occasions are only for those that wish to participate. This is very different to the old days of 'class' travel as cruises are generally without class.

Purvis, slacks takes you everywhere these days, you can look smart with a nice top, maybe some cheap custom jewelry. I was invited to the captain's table one time, (small ship) did not dress up, I was comfortable and so was the rest of the guests. Dresses are nice, but not mandatory. Cruises are not my thing yet, I have done three, (two were only four days) I prefer land, but I agree that they are relaxing; you are very lucky your son accompanies you, enjoy London and Paris, although I am curious about your plans for these two cities, I know that you have been there a few times, so I hope you get to do whatever you have left in your list.

This trip( if it goes ahead) will be my 7th to London and 3rd to Paris. I find you can never get tired of either of these 2 cities as there is always something to see that you haven't seen before. My son has never gone to Versailles and I would love to travel to Windsor Castle, visit the Tower of London, and once more Westminster Abbey. After returning from Hawaii last Mar. with pneumonia and then this past Nov. on returning from Florida I took a bad fall on an escalator at Toronto International I hope to go but not certain on whether I will get to go on any future trips but then I also made hotel reservations a few day ago for this trip just to be safe. Always remain positive and have something to look forward to. Purvis

Hi Oz, I too am worried about putting on some weight, as I’ve heard the food is very good on a cruise. As we plan on doing walking/adventure excursions when we dock, I’m hoping that will give us a little bit of exercise, and as we won’t be on the boat, food won’t be readily available to us. I’ll just have to be careful while at sea and during dinner. Our cruise does have a gym, but with limited room in my luggage, I don’t want to start packing gym clothes. Besides, I’m on vacation and want to have fun and relax, and not have to worry about working out every day. The one good thing about having to pay for your drinks on a cruise is that you won’t overdue it on high calorie fruity drinks! I like dressing up, so wearing evening attire is not a problem for me, although I’m only bringing two cocktail dresses for the formal nights, not evening gowns. I have maxi dresses for the other nights, as that’s what I would normally wear at home. I never wear pants in the summer unless I’m working out, so my summer clothes only consists of dresses. I actually had to order some shorts online for this trip, as I can’t wear a summer dress on our adventure tours! January has been a very stressful month for me, so I can’t wait to leave for this trip. Only a few hours to go, and then I’m on my way!

Hi Purvis, don’t rule out a cruise based on the dress code, as there is a buffet where you can go to eat and not have to dress up. The dress code only applies to the main dining room, and there’s only two “formal” nights. On the non-formal nights you can wear pants with a nice top if dresses aren’t for you. You just can't wear jeans/shorts or casual shoes/sandals. Wear what makes you comfortable and don’t worry about what others think.
