Riding the Historic Rovos Rail Across Untrammeled Corners of Southern AfricaGetting up close with the region’s majestic scenery—and the big beasts that call it home. I was in the back of a Pretoria junk shop, when I came across a zoetrope under a dusty canvas cover. A predecessor of film, the instrument consists of a metal cylinder that, when sent spinning, sets a series of images pasted in its interior in motion. Inside of that particular model was a sequence of identical chestnut horses, each in a slightly different running position. I turned the cylinder, put my eye to a slot, and the horse began its staccato canter. I smiled at this little optical trick, which was much like the view from the window of a train—snippets of individual frames which, strung together by memory, moved smooth as film. It rendered my next move in light and color—that afternoon, I was leaving Pretoria aboard the Rovos Rail, on a train journey that would bear me and 62 others north through South Africa, then cut a path across Zimbabwe, and four days later, deliver us to Victoria Falls. www.cntraveler.com/story/riding-the-historic-rovos-rail-in-africa?24 October 2023

Shopping in Seoul: Asia’s most stylish citySouth Korea's capital may have grown into a pop culture powerhouse, but its artisans are keeping ancient craft traditions alive With a population of almost 10 million, Seoul is one of Asia's largest and most vibrant metropolises. City workers spill out of futuristic skyscrapers at the end of the day, heading to the city's delicious and varied restaurants. On the weekends, nightlife rules – think neon-signed karaoke spots and lively bars in addition to the popular grab-and-go eateries. By day, however, the city is an underrated shopper's paradise. Forget the high-fashion boutiques (although you'll find those here, too), as it's all about neighbourhood hotspots. From ceramic studios to sustainable zero-waste havens, these are the best places for shopping in Seoul. www.cntraveller.com/article/shopping-in-seoul?5 November 2023

Remarkable images of Antarctic expeditions 100 years ago releasedA "rare and fragile" series collected by the Australian Antarctic Division are being seen by the public for the first time after hundreds of photographs, glass plate negatives and lantern slides were digitised by the National Archives of Australia (NAA). "The images provide a unique glimpse of the difficult conditions the explorers faced," NNA direction general Simon Froud said. "There are fabulous photos of the unique wildlife, as well as photos depicting the science and technology of the time." The images, taken between 1901 and 1936, were primarily captured by English-born Australian pioneer Captain John King Davies and feature Antarctic explorers Joseph Kinsey, Ernest Shackleton, Douglas Mawson and Frank Stillwell. www.9news.com.au/world/historical-photos-australian-antarctica-expeditions/1fcbc219-0c3b-40bb-b3d7-b03a83735123

This editor-approved travel backpack will replace your carry-on case on your next trip – and it’s currently on sale for Black Friday Packing in a host of useful features, Stubble & Co’s Adventure Bag has more than impressed our features editor, Toby Skinner. Here’s our honest review The benefits of investing in a decent travel backpack are numerous. In most instances, they’re just as roomy as your carry on, with the added perks of allowing for easy access to essentials (no need to unveil the entire contents of your case to the airport while digging about for your phone charger when you’ve got plenty of pockets to utilise). You can head off to the gate with both hands-free for your coffee and boarding pass. They’re a much better option for hiking and camping holidays; nobody wants to lug a suitcase across soggy grass or bumpy terrain. But while I’ve loved a few backpacks over the years, none has ever quite become ‘the one’: the Gandys bag that’s a touch narrow for laptops; the Patagonia duffel/backpack hybrid that’s great for the beach but too big to keep things neat on a weekender; the admittedly fake Belstaff rucksack with fraying shoulder straps etc. www.cntraveller.com/article/stubble-co-adventure-bag-review#20 November 2023

This May Be the Most Photogenic City in Europe — With Scenic Canals, Cobblestone Streets, and Twinkling Christmas Markets How to plan the perfect trip to this fairy-tale Flemish city. Amsterdam may be known for its picturesque canals, but it's far from the only European destination with such appeal. Located in northwest Belgium, Bruges enchants travelers with its scenic waterways, cobblestone streets, and medieval architecture. Compact and chock-full of photogenic landmarks — notably the Belfry of Bruges and 14th-century Stadhuis (City Hall) — the capital of West Flanders is prime for walking tours and aimless wandering. It’s also a joy for cycling. From the hidden passages with secrets ready to be discovered to the bustling squares, the city exudes a storybook atmosphere. The sweet smell of waffles and chocolate wafts out of confection shops. Cozy bars and quayside breweries pour Belgian beer for tourists and locals. Restaurants give visitors a taste of local cuisine with menus that spotlight cheese croquettes and beef stew. Many travelers opt to visit Bruges as a quick day trip from Brussels (the direct train runs frequently and takes less than an hour). However, it’s certainly worth staying the night to experience the full scope of its charm, from the early morning light that shines over the rooftops to the ambience when the sun goes down. We talked to local tour guides to discover the best places to see, eat, drink, and stay in Bruges. www.travelandleisure.com/bruges-belgium-travel-guide-8401475?15 November 2023

The loveliest British winter walks that end in cosy pubs
From the honey-hued Downs to the snow-powdered Dales, here are 8 pub walks that will spark a love affair with Britain’s winter landscapes Gazing out at a crisp, grey morning from under a thick layer of duvet, the idea of swapping slippers for wellies is less than appealing. But once the walking boots are on, the fleece zipped, a winding path squelching underfoot, we always feel better for it. Time and time again, we find there’s no more effective (or quintessentially British) way to beat the winter blues than a bracing ramble through misty woodland and silvery heath – especially when there’s the promise of a well-earned pint and a crackling fire at the end of it. There are plenty of pub walks that top the charts for beauty and good nosh across the country. We’ve rounded up eight of our favourites for capturing the best of the British countryside in all its wintry glory. What’s more, they lead straight to some of the loveliest country pubs and picture-postcard villages. www.cntraveller.com/article/loveliest-british-winter-walks-that-end-in-cosy-pubs?23 November 2023

Where to go for a winter holiday in the UKFrom adrenaline-pumping winter sports to a northern lights road trip, here are 14 brilliant ideas for a winter break – without leaving the country Once the picnic hampers and swimwear from our summer beach breaks have been safely stowed away and we’re fairly sure that all the sand has drained from our suitcase, we can finally let our minds drift to the cosiest of all getaways: a UK winter holiday. Cashmere blankets, hot chocolates and Hunter wellies at the ready, when it comes to a break in the cooler climes, we’re all in for as much mud as we can get outside and as many logs as we can get on the fire inside. In short, ramp up the cottagecore atmosphere (a world of slow living, thatched roofs and bliss in domesticity), and we’re on our way. And to help you work out where to hang your hat (and your coat, scarf and gloves), we’ve rounded up the best places to visit, and to stay, for a UK winter holiday, whether you’re after bracing walks on crisp and frosty mornings, icy lakes that glisten in the sun or picturesque snow-covered mountain peaks. The World's Largest Cruise Ship Is Coming in January—Here's What It's Like InsideRoyal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will weigh over a quarter million tons and hold up to nearly 10,000 passengers and crew. The biggest thing to ever hit cruising is coming in January 2024, when Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas—which will be the largest cruise ship in the world—will debut to passengers for the first time. With capacity for nearly 10,000 passengers and crew, Icon of the Seas is billed as part all-inclusive resort, part theme park, and a massive destination unto itself. Clocking in at 250,380 gross tons and measuring nearly a quarter mile long (1,198 feet to be exact), the vast ship will sport a total of 20 decks, 18 of which will be accessible to guests. The ship will be divided into eight different “neighborhoods,” each with their own distinct atmospheres, dining options, and activities. “Icon of the Seas is truly what we call a white paper ship,” Anna Drescher, manager of architectural design, new building and innovation for Royal Caribbean group, said in a video statement. “The reason that we call it that is we start with a blank sheet of sketch paper, so it truly is starting fresh.” In June 2023, the ship hit a major milestone when it completed its first sea trials outside the shipyard in Turku, Finland. Next up is the colossal new ship’s first voyage, slated to depart on January 27, 2024. It will sail roundtrip from Miami to the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and the Bahamas. The ship's typical seven-day itineraries include three at-sea days, so passengers have time to fully enjoy the endless choices of amenities on board. “We want guests to walk up to the ship and just have this moment of: I can’t believe that’s where I’m going,” said Jennifer Goswami, the line’s senior manager of product development. Here's a look at the enormous scale of the new ship and what to expect on board. www.cntraveler.com/gallery/icon-of-the-seas-see-inside?4 December 2023
