Post boxes of the Lake District - in pictures On one of his yearly trips to the Lake District with his family, Tom White spotted his next project in the post boxes scattered throughout the national park. ~ In his series Letter to the Lakes, the Newcastle-based photographer and journalist captures the bright red post boxes, their angular shapes standing out against the natural landscapes that frame them. ~ “I think people feel a connection with them,” says White. “They’re so recognisably British, like black taxis – these are things that are woven into our cultural tapestry.” Though post boxes are used less and less in the digital age, White hopes his images will preserve their memory. “Even if in 20 to 30 years they are totally out of use, at least we will have a record of them in that setting.” www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2019/dec/14/post-boxes-of-the-lake-district-in-pictures

London's beautiful launderettes – in pictures “I love launderettes. I love the smell of washing, the sound of the dryers and the punning names,” says Joshua Blackburn. The London-based photographer plans to immortalise every launderette in the capital: out of more than 300 he has, since the spring, shot 40. “I want the project to be a record of these amazing businesses at a time when they’re struggling to survive,” he explains. ~ Across the UK, there are now fewer than 3,000 launderettes – down from 12,500 in 1970 – mainly because nearly 97% of households own a washing machine, compared to 65% then. ~ “The colours, signs, machines, surfaces and geometry are impossible to resist,” says Blackburn. “I’ve explained to many owners why I want to photograph their premises and they look at me like I’m mad.” Launderettes, he adds, are a part of the community, like pubs and post offices. “But the social space they create is unique.” www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2018/jul/07/londons-beautiful-launderettes-in-pictures
