Glimpses of women through time: 130 years of National Geographic images In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, National Geographic has published Women: A Century of Change, a book that draws upon the organization’s expansive 130-year-old archive to showcase photographs of and by women.
As Susan Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of the magazine, notes in the introduction, the book is meant to “offer glimpses of women through time – how they were perceived, how they were treated, how much power they had or didn’t have – up to the present day.”
The ultimate aim, she writes, is to “bring more women’s lives into the light”. www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2019/nov/19/national-geographic-women-century-change-pictures

The Beatles during the recording of their first hit single, Please Please Me, in the backyard of Abbey Road Studios in London, January 1963 O’Neill later recalled: “I was asked to go down to Abbey Road Studios and take a few portraits of this new band. I didn’t know how to work with a group, but because I was a musician myself and the youngest on staff by a decade, I was always the one they’d ask. I took the four young lads outside for better light. That portrait ran in the papers the next day and the paper sold out. That band became the biggest band in the world, the Beatles” www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2019/nov/17/photographer-terry-oneill-a-life-in-pictures#img-1

54486 54610 54730 54766 A swell century: surfing Sydney's beaches from 1915 to 2019 – in pictures Surfing mythology often places the birth of the sport in Australia at the feet of Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, who was said to have taught board riding to 15-year-old Sydney swimming coach Isabel Letham during a visit to Sydney’s shores in 1915.
While this tale is disputed, it’s beyond doubt that since the early 20th century Sydney’s beaches have been a magnet for board riders.
Southern Swell, a new exhibition at Hazelhurst Arts Centre co-curated by lifetime surfing photographer John Veage and arts centre director Carrie Kibbler, celebrates this history with a selection of vintage boards and paraphernalia, alongside artworks and photography documenting what has become a favourite local pastime www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2019/nov/24/a-swell-century-surfing-sydneys-beaches-from-1915-to-2019-in-pictures
