Posting images in your posts is a great way to illustrate your thoughts and convey information easily. A picture does indeed paint a thousand words. However, we are bound by a few technical restrictions here, so only three images per post can be attached, and each one must be no more than 1Mb in size. You can manage the quantity limit easily by simply continuing your commentary on a new post where you'll be able to attach a further three images. But how do you resize your own photos that are all likely to exceed 1Mb? Help is at hand and it's relatively easy - and free. To do it, you'll need to access a program that loads your image, resizes it to a lower resolution (fewer pixels = a smaller sized file), then allows you to save it. yes, there are a few steps involved that take a little time, but do it regularly and it's a quick exercise. Which program do I use? There are too many out there to list them all, but I'll start off with some and other members can add their own preferred way of doing this. The first one I'll mention is Microsoft's Outlook email program (because many people either use it as their email client, or at least have it installed on their computer). Being an email program, Outlook has a feature to shrink photo sizes so they can be attached and sent without being rejected by the recipient due to size restrictions. To do this, locate the photo file on your computer and right-click, then select 'Send to', then 'Mail recipient'. Then click 'attach'. Instead of sending the email', right-click the attachment (that incidentally tells you its size) and select 'Save as'. Once stored on your computer (I recommend you create a separate folder for these), that's the source you can locate the file to attach to a post on this forum. If your email program doesn't shrink photo files, there are plenty of other methods you can use. If you use the Picassa photo storage program, that'll do it. Or like me, you can use a website without loading any program onto your computer. I use Tinypic.com as it's incredibly easy. Click on 'Choose file', then locate the file. In the resize panel, I choose 'Message Board' as the best size, then click 'Upload now'. Your image will appear on the right, so click it, then right-click and 'Save as'. Store it in a folder on your computer. When you're ready to post on this forum, your image can be attached by clicking on the button at top right.

I'm sure that this method was given by someone on the forum previously, maybe Chech...maybe Oz!

You're fine, Californian. The Travel-Forum police squad didn't even get a complaint, much less arrive at your place to put you under arrest. Facebook has an inbuilt image reduction facility so it's capable of storing an immense number of photos. It'd never work if it didn't do that. Accordingly, any saved photo from Facebook will already be under the 1Mb limit and can be attached here. So can most of the images you'll find on the internet as they're usually sized in kilobytes. And don't think there's a rule here regarding photo sizes - it's actually a design aspect of this forum, and others like it. If you try to attach a file that's larger than 1Mb it simply won't let you. So there's no human anywhere who's going to complain, and no images to delete for breaking rules.

Congratulations, Ms Boop - your first URL image!
I'll explain what's happened there. A URL is a Uniform Resource Locator. To most of us, it's better known as a 'website address'. When you insert an image that way, you're pointing the image display area to another website so it's linked. This forum isn't storing the photo like it does with the 'Add Attachment' method; it's merely storing the hyperlink (a string of letters starting with www..... or http: ).
But there are two problems with the URL method:
1. The size of the photo is very large. That's great if it's just one, but too many on one post or thread can potentially clog it up.
2. It relies upon a URL link and if that's broken, your photo ceases to be displayed. Not everything on the internet necessarily stays put forever. For example, if you had used this method to link to a photo from the old Trafalgar website, your image would no longer appear after they changed their webpage. So if you want to leave a permanent image (which I'd certainly recommend with travel tales and tips/advice), stored images are a better idea.

I will re-read your "posting photo" advice again and try to figure that method out.... Thanks for the excellent explanation of URL's Oz...

Oz, is this the correct size and the correct way then??? To enlarge photo, I would just double click on the photo?

That's the standard way of doing it, Ms Boop. If you think it's still too small for you after double-clicking, then simply adjust the size of the window you're viewing it in. To do this, hold down the Ctrl button whilst turning the thumbwheel on your mouse.

The Oz way is the simplest, Boop. I buckled down and posted a few pictures in the World's Biggest Rock. I used my email program, Outlook, but didn't send the emails. I just saved the email attachments, after renaming them, to the desktop from where it is easy to distribute them as you wish. The URL method is good but may not be permanent. Loving this forum. It is so easy to navigate

Well, I have been trying for the last couple of hours, my thick head does not allow me to get this right!!!! I understand what Oz is saying about the big pictures, noticed that when adding one, part of the text disappeared!, went in, edited, added the text, the picture disappeared! I am done for now, but I need to learn this!!!! grrrrrr I will try outlook, which I never use...

You're lucky Californian...you have outlook, I used to but don't anymore. What I'm now doing seems to be working so I'll just carry on with that method....it's a learning curve, for sure!

Californian, When you do this, ensure the frame for the picture hasn't been highlighted (i.e. turned blue). That happens if you accidentally click it. It's then marked to be replaced with any text you type, so that might be the reason your photo disappeared.

Have you been able to do it with your tablet before? I know my tablet has a different look of this forum than my windows computer and it functions differently.

No problems with my tablet. It's just what the doctor ordered. I use an i-Pad, Solaria; photos can be added and inserted as per usual. Have you recently changed any settings on your device?

No nothing has been changed (unless there was a sneaky upgrade that I don't know about). The only button now showing is Add Attachment but when I press it my cursor is just sent to the top of the page and out of my post I'm trying to write. I'll try tomorrow Dark now - time to draw curtains and settle down to watch a good movie.

Something has definitely changed. When I now press the New button next to a thread it doesn't take me to the last post I read as it used to, it goes to the top of the page and I have to scroll through. This only started yesterday morning. Very frustrating.
At the top it has always suggested using Tap A Talk I never tried as I didn't want to lose connection with this forum. Has anyone used it? And how dies it perform?

I use Tapatalk to access the forum on my Galaxy Tab. Give it a try. It looks and functions a bit differently, but it's easier to use on the tablet than the browser version that I use on my MS Surface. I'm still playing with it as my Galaxy is new but it's definitely good enough to use as my connection to the forum when I travel with the Galaxy. If you have the page bookmarked in the browser, you won't get disconnected. If you're worried, just write down the forum addy down the old fashioned way. The tablet won't be able to touch that.

Hi Chevh, I'm now in Tapatalk! I'm trying it out. A bit odd but something I could get used to?! We'll see. Now I'll try to upload the pic I was trying previously - it was in response to you saying you now have an animal free home- just in case you are thinking of a new fur friend;) Now how would that work? Photo doesn't show up just letters/numbers. We'll see when I post?!

Still getting used to Tapatalk. One thing I've noticed is that some of the links, esp. Those put on by Owen don't work in this. Yours do, Chech, so that's OK but I have to go back into the nirmal forum site if I want to read any of thed links as I did for the new(but older) tales Owen has been posting.
