West Jet in Canada has just added a $25.00 fee for first checked baggage and it has been stated that Air Canada will follow suit. Guess what they already charge $25.00 for your first checked bag if you fly economy. I booked a flt. with Air Canada in July and it stated the $25.00 fee for first checked bag. Purvis

That's is too bad Purvis, but does it apply to international flights as well? At least I haven't seen anything like that yet here in the states, I have paid in domestic flights only. (And that's the reason why there is no room at all on any flights, if you board late, good luck! )

(And that's the reason why there is no room at all on any flights, if you board late, good luck! ) For Economy travel (with no tier status), Air Canada allows the 1st checked bag free on international flights with a fee of $70 for the second bag, $225 for the third bag, If you fly Business, Premium Economy or Premium Rouge class (with no tier status) you are allowed 2 free checked bags, the 3rd checked bag is $225! The bag allowance and amounts can change depending upon your "tier status" and "class of service".

I just flew Air Canada last week domestically. There was no bag fee.
they do charge and have charged at $25 bag fee for the US if you aren't flying on a business class ticket or if you don't have status.

I always fly economy.. I'd rather spend my money while on a trip than on getting there. As the saying goes "The back of the plane lands at the same time as the front" and anyways as far a leg-room goes when you're only 4' ll" tall leg-room is no problem and I almost always choose an aisle seat. I will be flying economy in early Nov. to Florida so I guess that's why I will be paying $25.00 for my first bag. Purvis

Purvis I'm at the opposite end of the scale Purvis at 5'9" I can tolerate flying to the U.S. with little or no leg room, but for overseas travel my back wouldn't tolerate the long flight. I need to "pay the price" and be able to lie flat. Hinders the number of overseas journey I can take though.

It's the same here in Australia. We have 3 major airlines for domestic and 2 of the 3 charge extra for checked baggage. I have only flown internationally with one of them, Qantas, and like domestically they include checked baggage in the fare. I do like their checked baggage allowance to the US, 2 bags at 23kg each! I had to take advantage of it last year on the way home. I only had 22kg but there was no way it was going to fit in the one bag! Large Disney soft toys take up a lot of room!

Well, Air Canada announced they are charging a bag fee today for domestic flights, if you book a tango fare.

My Panama trip should be interesting with the baggage fee. I fly from St. John's to TO on a Wednesday night and fly to Bogota on Thursday morning. The flights are on the one ticket, so technically, I'm travelling internationally. So, first question is whether I get charged for the bag in St. John's. No surprise if I do, but I will question it. I shouldn't be charged for my Toronto to Bogota leg. On my return, I fly to Miami with Avianca then AC to Toronto, overnight there then to St. John's the next day. So, no international travel from AC's point of view (but my luggage is processed by Avianca, not AC, in Cartagena - and I have to go by their rules for luggage) BUT...by then, I will have Prestige status as the flight to Toronto and Bogota will be enough to push me over the 25,000 miles. So, at the very least, I know I won't get dinged on the Toronto to St. John's leg. LOL. Oh, and all the flights are daytime flights...so I won't get a chance to use my nifty cat eye mask!!

I doubt you'd have to pay Chech, at least on every leg of my last trip, the e-ticket had the allowance of one bag with no charges, but, otherwise, in the states we have to pay for domestic flights. I think we don't like all these changes, pay for bag, lunch, beverage, etc, but thinking how expensive was air travel just 20-30 years ago compared to today we really don't have much reason to complain. Now, if we only make those security lines disappear...Looking forward to read about Panama Chech.

Prestige won't kick in until January of 2015. When I got it last time, it kicked in as soon as I reached 25,000. I remember the counter attendant scolding me for using the economy line-up and I didn't have to pay for the second bag. But it's all moot anyway with my veteran's card! Knew it would come in handy for something! lol

If any charges apply, there would be the charge of $25 applied in St. Johns which would carry you right through to Bogata and then again from Miami which would see you back through to St Johns? What are Avianca's rules? If they charge you, perhaps AC won't... Ahhh, that's a shame...but you might be inclined to catch a few winks during the day... .....careful, you might be charged if caught sleeping!

If I don't think I'll use it, I won't take it so that I don't run the risk of losing it. If I do Egypt, Turkey or SA in the winter, all those flights are overnight...I'll finally get a chance to don it in public!

Not only is Air Canada now charging people for checked luggage on domestic flights but they are cracking down on the size of carry-on luggage you can bring. I saw on the news last night that the “luggage police” are measuring people’s carry-on bags at the airport, and if they are even slightly above the regulated size, they are forcing them to check in their bag. Pretty soon we will be paying for our carry-on luggage as well. Porter starting charging for luggage on Domestic flights a few months ago, and apparently they are planning on charging for carry-on luggage as of next year. Flying is getting more and more expensive!

I think it is a good thing they are enforcing carry on sizes. Far too many people bring on those great big roll aboards that take up all the room in the overhead bins. These bags clearly would not fit in the sizers.

My small suitcase is on wheels, but when I bought it I was told that it was the correct size to bring on the plane. I never bring it on the plane with me though, and leave it with the sky check. The only time I’d bring it on the plane with me is if the sky check was already full. The problem is, now that all airlines are charging for checked baggage, more people are going to be bringing their suitcase on the plane, which means even less room on the plane.
I don’t mind them checking the size of the carry-on bags, but if it’s slightly over, I think they should still allow the bag, given how much it costs to check it in. If it’s a lot over, then, of course, people should have to check in their bag.

About time an airline checks the size of cabin luggage and enforce the rules. No use having rules if you allow people to break them and get away with it. It's one of my pet peeves, oversize bags. It it's too big it's too big.

It it's too big it's too big. If the bag is going on the flight, then I agree with you, but if it’s going to be left with sky check, then I don’t think it’s a big deal if the bag is slightly over in size. Like I said above, it’s so expensive to check your bag, I don’t blame people for bringing a bigger carryon bag with them. Soon enough, we’ll be paying for our carryon bags as well.
