Just been reading through our itinerary. the river cruise ends in Basel and we have to get to the rail station at 8am the next morning. we won't have any swiss francs. Does anyone know if we can pay the taxi fare by Visa or Euro? Our TA thought it may be OK but wasn't sure. Any regular travelers on this forum know what is possible or would we need to get swiss francs just for this?

Someone asked the same question on Trip Advisor a few years ago and one of the answers was the following. Most of taxis accept credit cards. So do most of the restaurants. Some also accept EUR, but at a bad exchange rate. the change will be in CHF. Most of the other replies suggest getting some cash from an ATM. If it was me, I'd check that the driver will accept a credit card and just pay with the Visa card.

Basel is a unique Swiss city as it sits on the border of France and Germany ... walking distance. Lots of waterways in and around many parts of the city.
Euro has been accepted by Basel taxi drivers plus a couple of Aussie dollar coins (within last 5 years).
Please enquire with your River Cruise Company about the location the River Boat ties up. It may be within a 10-15 minute walk to main train station or less and Ask them about paying your taxi fare or if they have a "shuttle bus transfer" to the railway station and or city hotels. Most people on the River cruise will need a early morning transport option in a strange city with unknown weather.
