28 August 2011: After breakfast we checked out leaving our bags at the hotel. We walked down to the new waterfront and wandered along as it is going to be a long flight to San Francisco this evening. Left Auckland at 5.40pm bound for San Francisco on Flight NZ8 (747 aircraft) Upstairs in 23H&K. Premium economy. Heaps of leg room and a place to stretch out with my feet up. Not much in the way of security checks. No one even asked about the fluids or things we had ready in our little plastic bag. Pre take off drinks. Take off was very smooth. Hot towels offered. Further drinks and snacks given. Dinner was served about 1 hour into the flight. Smoked salmon with potato and green salad for entree, beef casserole, veg for main and almond and apricot cake with ricotta for dessert. Continual drinks. Smooth flight. Crossed the international date line. Slept a little which was good for me. Hot towels were offered when people were waking. Breakfast was served about 1.5 hours out from SF. First thing served was either a fruit smoothie or juice, followed by Yoghurt, fresh fruit salad, cereal, omelette, juice. Tea & coffee. Touched down at 10am to a sunny city. Lots of people arriving on various flights so the immigration area was very full but the lines moved fairly quickly. We had to hand over our passports and declaration (just one for the two of us), have our hands and thumbs scanned. They also scanned our eyes. No problems there and we were quickly through to collect our bags. We were sent straight through to the exit so didn't have to line up and put our cases and carryons through the security scanner. Decided on a taxi to the hotel. This cost $37.00 (including $2 airport charge) plus tip. Arrived at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel at 11.40am. Check in was smooth and our room was ready. An oldie-world charm to this hotel. We are on the 10th floor in room 1009. It is again August 28th as we crossed the date line so Happy Birthday to my sister AGAIN......After dropping our bags and freshening up we wandered about 100 steps and we were at Union Square. We decided to do a hop/off bus tour. $29.00 per ticket which is valid for 48 hours. We took the red line which took us around the city and then went over the Golden Gate Bridge. There was a lot of fog around the bridge but for brief seconds it cleared while we we at the vantage look out and I was able to get a couple of photos. On our return to Union Square we decided to take the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf and look around. It was getting very cold so bought a fleece ($8.99). Alan had a T-shirt printed. After looking around and getting a drink we decided it was getting too cold so headed back to ride the cable car back to our hotel. There was a long line and it took just under an hour to board. We arrived back at the hotel at 7.40pm after we had a hold up half way back. 10th floor. We decided on room service for dinner as we were starting to feel a bit weary. $17.00 for my chicken caesar salad and $14.00 for hubby's Bistro Burger.....That was huge!!, $3 for delivery, 20% service and a wee tip for the nice lady who delivered the meal to us. Went out for a short stroll around the hotel but it was quite foggy/drizzly so headed back. Bed at 9.30pm as it had been a very long day.

3 ~ East Coast USA & Canada ~ Sept 2011 ~ NZ Nurse
29 August 2011 Happy Birthday to our grandson who turns 3 today NY time but of course it was yesterday NZ time. Wake up call at 6am. Everything sorted and ready to go. Left the hotel at 6.40am and arrived at SFO at 7am. The taxi was very fast. No traffic around. $35.00 plus tip. Damn, could have had at least another half an hours sleep. We checked in at the curbside....easy, peasy.....no queue. Went into the terminal to see hundreds and hundreds of people lining up for security. It snaked up one side and back down the other. One thing I have found here in the first 24 hours in the US is that you always seem to be in a long queue for something. The line moved very quickly though which was a surprise. ID and boarding pass ready, we were through the first official in about 15 minutes. It was then our turn to gather the bins to put our belongings through the x-ray scanner. This included our shoes. No problems there either. 20 minutes all up from the time we entered the terminal was such a surprise. Now we had to wait 2 and a half hours until we could board. See, I could have had another hour in bed but knowing my luck we would have struck a very slow lineup or something else could have happened. Alan looked around for some cereal for breakfast but alas it all had yoghurt on it so he settled on sharing my large container of fresh fruit. We wandered the shops in the terminal before taking a seat by Gate 80. We boarded at 10.20am and pulled out at 10.55am. We taxied a long way and then we sat at the end of a vacant piece of tarmac because the plane had a problem with one of its indicators. We sat there ¾ of an hour. Finally got into the sky at 11.45am. United flight 760, Boeing 757, seats 22 E&F. What an old plane and it didn't look as though it was airworthy. It was quite cramped inside so I needed to juggle myself quite a few times. After about 1 hour they were bringing out a lunch. No included meals on this flight and bugger all to choose from either. By the time they got to us there was nothing for me so I just settled for a glass of orange juice. I must take this up with my TA as she had not told us we would have to pay for the refreshments in-flight. They crew do not take cash either. It is credit or debit card only so Alan's turkey roll will cost a lot when we get back and receive the bill from VISA. Our juice was free of charge. We did not see the cabin crew again until about an hours out from JFK when they came around and asked if anyone would like a drink. I was dying for a cup of tea and enjoyed it very much. It was a good flight with only a few bumps here and there. I thought it would have been a lot rougher seeing hurricane Irene had just gone through a day earlier. We touched down at 7.55pm NY time. We taxied for some distance before pulling up at Gate 8 at 8.05pm. By the time we walked through to baggage claim our cases were coming around on the carousal. We gathered them and headed out to get a yellow taxi to the hotel. Very orderly here. Quickly got a taxi and went for the hair raising ride through to our Novatel Hotel Times Square arriving at 9.15pm. Check in was smooth. We are up on the 28th floor. Lovely views out but alas not of Times Square itself. We dropped our bags, took a couple of night photos and headed out to Times Square. This place is crazy. Thousands of people everywhere. And the buildings all lit up. It was quite amazing. We headed back to the hotel at 11.30pm. Had a cuppa down in the bar before heading up to our room to do some washing. The tour washing routine starts again......wash it in the bath, wring it out by hand, roll it in a towel and then jump on it to get as much water out as possible.......wallah done. It's just past midnight so night night...

30 August 2011. Not a very good sleep. Managed about 3 hours only in total. Up and out of the hotel at 9am. Went down to McDonald's were Alan got some breakfast and I had my morning cuppa. After that we walked down to Times Square and bought a 48 hour pass for Gray Lines hop on/off buss. $54 each. This ticket also covers NYC by night also. We rode the bus around the city loop. We got off at Battery Point and took the Staten Island free ferry which gave us very good views of the Statue of Liberty. The lines for the Liberty Island trip were so very long we gave it a miss seeing it was very hot (around 29-30 degrees C). Once back from Staten Island we walked back up town to Ground Zero. It is all a giant construction site at the moment, but it was still something we had to do. We paid our respects with a little quiet time. They are building what will be New Yorks tallest building due for completion in 2012. We got back on the bus and rode around the lower Manhattan area passing the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges and got off at the Rockefeller building. There were no queues to get up to the TOTR so up we went. Fabulous views. $23 per person. The lift had a glass top and you could see all the way up. We then descended and walked back down to Times Square with a drink in one hand and the camera in the other.. Looked in the Toys R Us shop and the Disney store. Purchased an item each for the grandchildren. Arrived back at the hotel at 6pm. We have walked for miles but NY is a very easy city to walk around. Had dinner in the hotel. Not much to choose from though but we were in a bit of a hurry. After dinner we walked 2 blocks to catch the hop on/off us for the night tour. This took us around downtown all lit up and then across the Manhattan bridge and through Brooklyn. We had excellent views back across the river to the bright lights of Manhattan. This tour finished in Times Square at 10pm. We wandered back through the crowds to the hotel looking in a few shops along the way. Went out onto the rooftop bar for a cuppa before going and trying to get onto one of the hotel computers to print out our tickets for the Empire State building tomorrow. Washing from the previous night dry to folded and packed away. Again it's midnight so night night.

31 August 2011. Up at 6.40am, well before Alan. Decided to take a wander across to Starbuck's and get a cup of tea and have a wee walk. Back to the hotel at 7.30am. Checked e-mails and bank accounts. Alan's still asleep and it's 8.00am!!! Why can't I sleep like him. Weather nice and warm already. Temps supposed to be high 20s. We left the hotel at 8.45 am and headed to the Empire State Building. No queues today although we had purchased express tickets so it didn't matter. Went up the first 80 floors in one lift then caught the second to the 86th floor. Outlook was a bit hazy today but we managed to get some good photos. Following this we descended and walked back across town. We headed to the aircraft carrier Intrepid moored on the Hudson River. $23.00 per person to go in and onto the carrier. It was very hot. 30 degrees so it was nice to find some shade on the ship. Wandered round all the decks and then Alan went onto the submarine Growler (included in the entry price) that is also moored at the marina. I didn't go because I do not like enclosed spaces so instead sat and wrote some postcards in the shade under the Concord airplane which they also have there on the dock. After a little while there we walked back across town and had lunch. We then decided to visit some of the exhibits and the National History Museum. To get there we used our hop on/off ticket to take us to the Upper Side of the city where the museum is. The museum has free entry but if you like you can give a small donation of $1.00 per person. We walked back through part of Central park exiting at Columbus Circle. We went to an Irish pub and had some dinner. We have walked miles today. It was still very warm, 27 degrees at 7.30pm when we headed back to the hotel.

1 September 2011. No rushing today. Left the hotel at 9,40am and headed up Broadway to Central Park to walk around it a wee bit more. It is a huge park and it would take longer than a day to see it all. We entered through Artisan's Gate and wandered along the paths until we got to Liberty Walk which headed to the mall. Lots of young men with rickshaw type bikes taking people for rides through the park. The horse and carriages were also plentiful. $50.00 for the first 20 minutes then $20 after that for a little extra time. We didn't do either of these. Liberty Walk is a wide treelined avenue with lots of seating along the way. As we strolled along there were various artists, musicians and street venders all doing their thing. We reached the large fountain at Bethesda Terrace and then veered right along to the boat shed. From there we took a few of the smaller tracks. Saw our first ever squirrels. Black ones and reddish/grey ones. Cute. On we went until we had done a circuit around a large part of the lake, crossing Bow Bridge and exiting via Freedom Plaza. We meandered down town stopping to get something for a late lunch. We ate this back at the hotel where the air conditioning was a welcome relief from the hot afternoon heat. Mid afternoon headed out again down through Times Square. Bought a new pair of shoes before walking a little further to Macy's. Looked around there, bought a dress. Got a couple of souvenirs for the family. By this time it was time for dinner. Found a nice seafood restaurant so went in there. Arrived back at the hotel just after 9pm. Packed up in readiness for the move to the TT hotel tomorrow.

2 September 2011. Checked out of the hotel at 10am. We then walked across the road one block to the Sheraton Hotel & Towers which the hotel where our TT begins this evening. We checked in but because we were too early our room wasn't ready, so we stored our bags and headed to the subway. We caught a D train out to Coney Island. Trains cost $2.25 a trip no matter how far you go. $9.00 for both of us return. A beautiful sunny day again awaited us at the beach and fun park. Alan rode the Cyclone, an old wooden and steel roller coaster....not me!!! We walked along the boardwalk stopping for a cool berry smoothie each before looking around. There were quite a few people around both on the beach and in the water. A lot of people were playing beach volleyball. We caught the D train back to Manhattan getting off at the Rockefeller subway station and walking a block to our hotel. The train trip was just under an hour each way. We collected our stored bags at 3pm and checked in the the Trafalgar TD. Her name is Linda Mancini. We met again at 6pm for a drink with our tour mates. 51 in total for this tour. 6 Kiwis, 2 Americans and 1 Welshman and the rest are Australians. After this we headed out to get some dinner at 7.30pm. Returned to the hotel at 8.45pm to prepare our suitcases and day bags for tomorrow. Alarm set for 6.00am.........

The TD sorted our seats in alphabetical order for today and from tomorrow on we move clockwise 3 seats. We had a short orientation tour of New York city before heading south to Washington DC. Our first stop was at Molly Pitcher, a roadside group of shops including Starbucks and other cafes. We left there at 10.15am and headed over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge for Philadelphia arriving approximately 11.00am. We had an orientation tour before getting off the coach and going to see the Liberty Bell and information centre. This was our lunch stop. Arrived back to our meeting place at 1.15pm. We assembled at the Borse before walking across the road viewing Benjamin Franklin's grave. From here we walked across the street to the Independence Hall where we had a short narration about the liberty fight. We left Philadelphia at 2.35pm. We drove through the outskirts of Baltimore at 4.10pm. We arrived into the outskirts of Washington DC at 4.45pm. Spotted the Capitol from New York Avenue as we drove along. We arrived at the Hilton Capital Hill at 5.35pm. 4th floor. Just time for a very quick bathroom stop before boarding the coach again to take us to Union Station for dinner. A very nice 3 course meal in the beautiful terminal. From here we went on the Washington Illumination optional to see the many buildings and monuments lit up. We stopped and took photos of the Capitol, Washington Memorial,...............We arrived back at the hotel at 10.40pm. Did some washing, had a cuppa and headed to bed at midnight.

4 September 2011. Alarm went off at 6.30am. Down for breakfast at 7am. Left the hotel at 8.30am for our orientation tour of Washington DC. Our local guide was Louanne. She was very good. Our first stop was Lafayette Park and the White House. Only a couple of other people around so we got some good photos. We then drove around many of the cities legislative and senate buildings and monuments. Went past the Martin Luther King monument. This was supposed to have been dedicated and officially opened on August 28th but because of hurricane Irene that ceremony was cancelled and has not yet been rescheduled. It is however still open to the public, You walk between a very large boulder split down the middle. This represents the boulder of despair. When you walk through there is another boulder 30 feet high which has a carving of Luther King coming out of it which represents the boulder of hope. We then stopped at the Lincoln memorial and the memorials Vietnam and Korean war soldiers. We then stopped at the Thomas Jefferson memorial. Our orientation tour finished at 12 midday and we were dropped off outside the Smithsonian Air and Space museum which DH wanted to see. Lunch was in there. After looking around for about an hour we were picked up from there at 1.40pm. From there we went around town to the Arlington War Cemetery. We took the guided tour on there little buses. The first stop was the Kennedy gravesites. The eternal flame for J F Kennedy and Jackie O along with his wee son Patrick (2 days old), who died 15 weeks before his father and also their daughter who died at birth in 1956. She has no name. We then saw Ted & Bobby Kennedy's plain white crosses and small plaques. We then caught the next wee bus to the amphitheater for the changing of the guard. We did not get off. It was just too hot and muggy (31 degrees c) so we stayed on around the cemetery listening ton the commentary until we reached the beginning. We waited for the others to get back. Left there at 4.15pm and arrived back at the hotel at 4.45pm. After freshening up we walked for 5 minutes down to the White House and wandered around for a while before stopping at a local restaurant, PJ Clarke's, for dinner. Walked back to the hotel for the night.

? 5 September 2011. Alarm went off at 6.00am. Bags out and down to breakfast at 6.45am. Left the hotel at 7.30am. Weather showery. Drove along the highway for a little while before getting stuck in a little traffic due to a truck accident. Arrived in Lewisburg for morning tea at the Country Cupboard at 9.50am. After half an hour there we left at 10.20. Everyone is so good at getting to the coach on or before our arranged time. The showers stopped but it remained cloudy. After travelling a few more miles it started to drizzle again, but this did not last long, We stopped at Corning for our lunch. There it was a large supermarket called Wegmans where you could buy anything and everything including pharmaceuticals. They had a large cafe where we could choose from hot and cold food. I grabbed a salad and DH had a ham roll made. They put ssooo much filling in that he could not eat it all. This is normal for most things we have bought to eat in the US. We left there and travelled on towards Niagara stopping for a comfort stop and for Rod to get gas for the coach as it is cheaper in the US than in Canada. We crossed the Niagara River at 4.15pm and onto the Grand Island, then off again. From these bridges we caught our first glimpse of the mist rising from the falls. We arrived at the US/Canada boarder at 4.30pm. We had to get off the coach and go inside to present our passports. No problems for anyone and we got our passports stamped. It didn't take long and we were over the boarder and into Niagara. We arrived at our hot, The Hilton, at 5.10pm. 15th floor. We got our room keys an had enough time for a quick freshen up before we left at 5.50pm for our 'Be My Guest' dinner at a Vinelands vineyard. When we arrived we had a tasting of 3 wines and a wine/vodka combination called ice wine before going into the dining room. We had a delicious meal of soup, steak and chocolate dessert, tea and coffee. We left there at 8.50pm for our half hour trip back to town. Enroute back Rod drove us past the falls to see them lit up with different colours. We arrived back at the hotel at about 10.00pm. Some of us walked across the road to the casino to get some Canadian currency from their ATM. We walked back and went to the 34th floor of the hotel to take night shots of the falls as our room did not look out over them. Back to our room at 11.00pm and readied our cases for departure tomorrow although we do not have to have the bags out until 8.45am. We wanted to get everything done tonight so we could get up, have breakfast and take a walk across to the falls before we board the Maid of the Mist at 10.00am. Lights out just before midnight.

7 September 2011. Down for breakfast at 7am. After this we walked down to the falls. Not many people around at this time so we got some nice photos. Boy the mist from the Canadian falls goes for miles. We walked back in time to put out cases out at 8.45am. At 9 we left to go down through town to see a flower garden but it was closed to Linda took nearly all our tour mates for a walk to where we were earlier to take photos. Because we had already done it and it was very dark and wet we stayed on the coach with another couple of people. When the others returned we went down to the Maid of the Mist. We boarded out boat at 10.15am. Blue ponchos on, we set of towards the American and Bridal Veil Falls before turning towards the Canadian Falls. The boat got very close to the bottom of these falls and we all got very wet. The trip took half an hour. After we disembarked at 10.45am we had 2 hours to look around Niagara and get some lunch. DH and I walked around the area before taking a ride on the large wheel that gave us great views down to the falls and the surrounding area. $10.00 each for 4 revolutions. We left Niagara at 12.45pm 2.45pm stopping to take photos of the whirlpool and the sky ride across them. We then drove to Niagara on the Lake where we walked through the pretty town which had beautiful flowers lining the street. I bought a leather jacket which was less than half price in a sale. I also got a couple of cow items to take home. We left there at 2..45pm enroute to Toronto. We crossed the bridge into Burlington at 3.40pm and arrived at our hotel, The Sheraton Toronto at 4.30pm. 6th floor. While waiting for our cases we looked around a few of the shops beneath the hotel. Went up to our room to freshen up before dinner within the hotel at 6.30pm. Salmon for me tonight. At 8pm we went for a walk down to the CN Tower. This took about 10 minutes. It was lit up mauve and blue. Got back to the hotel at 9pm.

8 September 2011. Up at 7am and down to breakfast at 7.45am. We left the hotel at 8.30am for our CN Tower ascent. Enroute we stopped at the provincial parliament buildings and WW1 memorial. From here we drove the short distance to the tower. We went up to observation deck on the 114th floor. Good views from that height. We walked up to the next level where a small part of the floor was glass. We weren't game enough to stand on it but many others did. We left there at 10.35am. We then drove around the city and up to Casa Loma, a huge old original house built like a castle. Casa Loma means house on the hill. We then drove back down into the city and went to the St Lawrence market arriving at 11.45 am. After a short while there we headed back to the hotel. The afternoon was free so we walked to the Toronto Eaton shopping centre which has hundreds of shops on various levels and as large food court. We got some lunch and wandered around. We then walked back to the hotel at 4.00pmto drop off our purchases and check some e-mails from home and catch up on a bit of news. After a little rest we readied ourselves for our evening on Lake Ontario. We took the coach down to the waterfront and boarded our paddle steamer type boat at 6.30pm. We set off at 7.00pm. It was a lovely evening. Dinner was buffet and it was quite nice. After dinner we went topside and got fabulous views looking back at Toronto city. When the lights all came on it was beautiful. Every hour on the hour the CN Tower has a light show which was pretty. We had a DJ and dancing on the top deck and we all had a great time. We arrived back at the hotel 10.30pm.

9 September 2011. Up at 6.45am. Bags ready for collection and down to breakfast at 7.30am. We left the hotel in Toronto at 8.30am. Weather nice and sunny. Quite a bit of traffic heading in both directions. We headed out along Interstate 401. After a couple of hours we stopped for a comfort stop and a drink at Trenton on Route, a roadside establishment. After about half an hour we set off again. We arrived in Kingston at 12.45. This was our lunch stop. We found a nice bakery and sat with another couple for lunch. From there we walked around the small town and went down to the waterfront. We left there at 1.50pm and crossed the St Lawrence river end along by Fort Henry which is a military area. We had to turn around and go back to town as one of our tour companions had left their camera in the park. As the coach was pulling up a man had just bent down to pick the camera up which was very lucky. Back we went along the scenic St Lawrence river drive. This river has over 1800 islands on it ranging from 10ft x 6 ft to very large ones. We passed through the township of Gananoque at 1000 Island. Following this we passed Mallory Town which is where we caught a short glimpse of Heart Island with its castle house. We arrived at the outskirts of Ottawa at 4.15pm. We then turned onto Rochester St and travelled to our hotel, the Sheraton, arriving at 4.40pm. We put our day bags into our room and headed off on our own for a walk around the city as the others were not leaving for another hour. This is a pretty city. We walked up to the Parliament, and then down across a bridge which overlooked the canal and it's locks. We continued down to the art gallery and saw a sculpture of a large spider. From there we walked back along until we reached the Byward market. Many of the places were closing for the evening so we just strolled around and went back to the hotel where we had dinner at 7.00pm. After dinner we again went for a short walk around the hotel are before heading back to pack up our belongings for tomorrow.

10 September 2011. Again the alarm went off at 6.45am and we went through the ritual of bags ready in the room for pickup at 7.30 then went down for breakfast. We left the hotel at 8.30am and went for an orientation tour around the city passing many of the sites we had seen the afternoon before. We stopped at Parliament and walked around stopping for photos at a sculpture which shows women having tea. From there we went and looked at some old photos in the Fairmont Hotel before walking down to the Byward market again. This time all the stalls were open. We bought some fresh fruit to eat on the trip and also got a cuppa and a croissant. We left the market area at 11.00am to head to Montreal, Quebec. On the coach we watched a documentary about the biggest ice storm to hit Montreal. It was very interesting. We arrived at the Quebec information stop in Rigaud at 12.30pm for a comfort stop and for Rod to fill up the coach with diesel. We left just after 1.00pm. Crossed onto the island where Montreal is situated at 1.20pm. Montreal means Royal Mountain. Quebec means where the river narrows. We got stuck in heavy traffic as there were roadworks. They were fixing up a large parts of an integrated junction of on and off ramps. We arrived into the centre of the city at 2.00pm. We had our group photo taken by Chateau Ramezay Jardin Du Governus (Governors Garden). We then walked around before stopping for a late lunch at 2.30pm. We looked in a couple of shops before walking the short distance to The Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal. We headed back to the coach pickup point at 4.00pm, arriving back at the hotel at 4.15pm. Our dinner tonight was back down in the city so we were picked up at 5.30pm. And taken down. We left there at 8.15pm. Some of us (including me) took the coach back to the hotel but half, including DH, walked back. This took about 40 minutes. An early night tonight.

11 September 2011. Left the hotel in Montreal at 9.00am and had an orientation tour with Maria, our local guide. We observed a minutes silence in honour of those affected by 9/11 ten years earlier. We first stopped at Notre Dame Citadel Montreal where she gave the history of the city. We then drove around the city before crossing the bridge to St Helene Island. From there we drove onto Notre Dame Island which was man made to extend the area for the expo in 1967. Part of our orientation up Mont Royal (Royal Mountain) had to be cancelled because the roads were closed for a large bike ride. There is the a formula 1 trace there where they hold the grande prix. We drove around the track. After this we drove back and saw many of the buildings used for the Montreal Olympics in 1976. We then made our way back to the hotel to drop our guide off and use the facilities and get a cuppa. We left at 11.40am. Stopped at Drummendville at 1.00pm for lunch at a mall with a food court. At 2.00pm we left. We stopped in Levis in Quebec at a place called Parc de Chutes at 3.30pm. This was a hidden treasure stop by beautiful waterfalls. There was a suspension swing bridge over the river. Had an icecream and went for a walk through lovely trees to the bridge and good views of the falls. We left at 4.10pm,. Crossed Canada's largest suspension bridge and into Quebec City arriving at the Delta Quebec Hotel at 4.45pm. After a rest and freshen up we left at 6.10pm for our optional dinner in the revolving restaurant. Lovely views and a very nice meal. At 8.30pm we left and took the coach down around the city which was pretty with the lovely lights of the buildings and fountains. We went for a short stroll around a few of the cobblestoned streets past some very quaint shops and restaurants. We then reboarded the coach and some of us went back to the hotel with the driver arriving 9.30pm. The TD took the others for a longer walk that would finally see them arrive back at the hotel.

12 September 2011. Another later start today. Left the hotel at 9.00am for our orientation tour of Quebec City with Suzanne our guide. Quebec City is a walled city and is very pretty. 4,000 people reside within the wall. Three prominent dates are important for Quebec City, 1608 when the French began it all then in 1759 The British took the city by force. In 1867 the Confederation of Canada was signed. Our tour was 3 hours long and took us first to the Parliament area. While there we had a very short light shower of rain. Parliament is across the road from our hotel. From there we went up and around to the Plains of Abraham, down through the narrow street of the old city area and port. We saw the Citadelle, Notre Dame Quebec and the Chateau Frontenac amongst other sites. At 12.00pm we were dropped off down town and the rest of the day and night were free. We walked around all the narrow cobbled streets and down 100 steps looking in many of the shops before taking the funicular up the hill to Le Chateau Frontenac. We had lovely views across the St Lawrence River to Levis. We wandered across the road and stopped at a sidewalk restaurant and had some lunch at 1.00pm. After lunch we wandered some more before climbing onto the wall and taking a short walk along. This lead us back toward the hotel were went to drop off our bags and have a wee rest. DH went for another walk while I wrote up our diary and folded our washing that had dried from the night before. After a good rest we set out again and walked up to Louis Herbert, a lovely restaurant on Grande Allee Est. We had a very nice meal outdoors, $134.00 incl taxes and tip. It was a pleasant evening. The Maîtrede was very pleasant and when he found out we were from NZ he came back with his All Blacks jersey and gave DH a high five. We strolled back to the hotel, arriving at 8.30pm. Time to pack our cases is readiness for farewelling Canada in the morning.

13 September 2011. Up at 6.30am and bags out at 7.00am. We left the hotel at 7.50am. We watched a video onboard the coach for about ¾ of an hour. Arrived at our first quick comfort stop at 9.15an. Left there at 9.30am. We travelled through lovely countryside lined with beautiful trees which were just starting to show signs of changing colour for the Autumn. We played a shoe race down the coach which was fun. The shoe we bet on came in third. We arrived at duty free next to the Canada/US boarder at 11.30am. After a bit of shopping and a comfort stop we boarded the coach to cross back into the US at 12.10pm. We were stuck on the coach for a little while because the coach in front of us was full of tourists that needed to be processed as they had not been in the US before. Derby Line is where the boarder is. We all checked out ok so we were on our way at1.00pm. We stopped for lunch just up the road at 1.10pm at New port. Left there at 2.15pm. We crossed the Connecticut River into New Hampshire at 3.05pm. Just along the road we stopped at The Flume for half an hour. Got an icecream and had a comfort stop. Left there at 3.45pm. A little way down the road our coach came to a stop. It had a technical problem that Rod tried so hard to rectify. After talking with the coach company we set off again after half an hour down the highway. The coach company was overriding the onboard computer but we had to stop briefly again on the side of the road. It only took a moment and we were on our way again. We are attempting to reach another coach sent to meet us. We made it to Concord, the capital of New Hampshire at 5.40pm. We then stopped at 5.45pm in the town of Bow at a truck stop where we were to meet the other coach. It wasn't there when we arrived so we unpacked our personal belongings from inside the coach and had a comfort stop at the petrol station. When the other coach arrived Rod and the other driver unloaded our suitcases and we were on our way at 6.35pm. This coach is a bit older and gee it badly needs a wheel alignment and tyre balance. It was quite an uncomfortable trip from then on until we reached our hotel in Boston at 7.45pm. We got our room keys, on the 7th floor, and had a quick freshen up before heading out to the Legal Seafood restaurant for our dinner optional arriving at 8.30pm. After dinner we went for a walk with Linda and saw some of the area around the hotel. $62.00 each for this. We arrived back at 11.30pm. After such an eventfully long day it was time for bed.

14 September 2011. Alarm went off at 7.00am. Down to breakfast before leaving on our orientation tour of Boston. Linda took us on this one. We went around and saw a lot of old buildings and statues including The Old State House, The Old South Meeting House, Park Street Church, The State House, Kings Chapel and Burial Ground and Boston Common to name a few before getting off the coach and walking to the see the oldest wooden house, The Paul Revere House, and then onto the oldest church, The Old North Church. We sat in the pews and heard about the church and what happened hundreds of years ago. From there we walked the short distance up to where Rod had the coach parked. On our way to the coach we were waiting to cross the street when a nice policeman was getting into his car. He stopped and got out to talk to us and he then allowed us to have our picture taken with him. Once we were back on the coach we drove down to the dock and saw the USS Constitution and the USS Cassin Young in dry dock. We then left a few people there while Alan and I, along with some others, came back to the hotel for a comfort stop. Those that were going on the Harvard optional left and we had a free afternoon. We walked down to the waterfront and had a ride on the lovely wee carousal. $3.00 each. From there we walked through the market and stopped and had McDonald's for lunch before continuing on up to the Boston Common. We went for ride on the lake in a boat with a large white swan on the back. This is where the young man peddled the boat around the lake. $2.75 each. From there we walked some more through the Common before Alan had his photo taken outside the Cheers pub. The front of this was the original one used in the tv series. We then walked up the cobbled streets, then went to the most photographed street in Boston, Acorn Street, which has an very cobbled way which is made up of all different size rocks. Wandered back down and got a cuppa and went back to the hotel at 2.45pm for wee rest. It was very hot today. Temp in the high 20s. Much warmer than Canada had been. A little muggy too. Alan went for another walk while I stayed and wrote up the diary. He arrived back at 3.50pm. We went for another short stroll before going back to the hotel to get ready for our farewell dinner. We gathered at the coach and left at 5.30 taking us the short distance to a restaurant. It was a very nice meal with 2 drinks included. After we ate we farewelled two couples who were ending their trip in Boston. One couple were heading home and the other was going to start another tour in Boston. We left the restaurant at 8.30pm and walked along the water front back and back to the hotel arriving at 9.30pm. We repacked our bags for our early departure in the morning.

15 September 2011. Left our Boston hotel at 7.45am for NYC. A good day for travelling as there was some cloud cover. We crossed onto Rhode Island at 9.00am stopping at Newport at 9.50am. We had half an hour for a comfort stop and to get a drink. I walked across the road from the information centre to take some photos of the oldest buildings which were built in the 1700s. We then drove around many streets seeing beautiful big homes. These building are very exclusive and truly were huge with lovely manicured grounds. Our next stop was at 11.55am which was our lunch stop in Richmond, Rhode Island. We left at 12.40pmm. We watched an onboard movie called RV which starred Robin Williams. It was very funny with most of the coach laughing loudly throughout. We then passed through New Haven at 1.50pm before stopping for a comfort stop at 2.30pm. We left there are 2.45pm. We arrived into the Bronx area at 3.15pm before crossing the Bronx Whitestone Bridge at 3.30pm. The coach was heading to JFK to drop some people off who were either flying straight out or staying overnight for early flights the next morning. We arrived at JFK at 4.00pm to drop off 10 people. Left there at 4.10pm and arrived at the Sheraton Hotel on 52nd street at 5.30pm. We all then said our goodbyes before going in separate directions. After collecting our cases we went around the corner and got a taxi to take us down to the Comfort Inn Hotel on 25th Street, arriving at 6.30pm. $10.00 for this. This hotel is not nearly as nice as the ones we have been staying in since we left home. We were feeling a bit tired so quickly got a few things out of the case I wanted and then we went for short walk around the area. We grabbed a quick dinner before having an early night.

16 September 2011. No having to get up early today. Left the hotel at 9.00 and took some things to the Post Office to send home. We got a big box, $3.79 and put in the T-shorts we had bought along with a couple of other items. It cost $79.65 to post it home. The box weighed 10lb 4oz (4.7kg). From there we walked through several blocks looking in several shops. Stopped and bought a few last minute souvenirs before heading up 5th Avenue and finding a jeweller shop where Alan bought a watch. We then walked back to the hotel and dropped these off. We then walked down to the WTC to see the new building being constructed. We had a small glimpse of the memorial gardens. We could not go in as you have to have to have a pass and there were none available for many weeks. It is a very popular place for friends, family and others so it is booked out. It is a free entry though. We then walked across to the 9/11 memorial museum and saw haunting pictures and videos from that day in 2001. We then wandered all the way back up to the hotel to drop off a couple of items before finding an Irish Pub a few streets up for dinner. We arrived back at 8.30pm. It had been a day of walking as this city is very easy to walk around. Packed our bags on our return ready for our 9.00am pick up in the morning. Our East Coast trip is now almost over as we head to LA tomorrow to start our Western Discoverer tour followed by 6 nights in Hollywood independently. Alarm set for 7.00am.

What a great tour made all the better by our fantastic TD Linda and faultless driver Rod. They both made the 2 week trip one heck of a memory. They were such experts in their field. Very professional and Rod's driving was exceptional even when he had to continually deal with the ever expanding cases. Linda's hidden treasures were very good.
The optionals we chose were also, in my opinion, value for money.
The hotels were very comfortable and all had irons and hairdryers. Many had free internet either in the lobby using the hotel's computers or had free wireless available if you take your own notebook or laptop.
Linda's enthusiasm for her job and country are an asset and a credit to her. The lovely fine weather, with one or two exceptions, helped us get the most out of the tour.
I would thoroughly recommend this tour to others, but be warned, it is a lively tour.
Another thing that made the tour was our tour mates. We all seemed to get on well and I for one enjoyed their company. There were a few times where comments were made about the times for rising in the mornings and the walking involved but these usually came only from a very few who had obviousy not done a lot of research on this particular tour. We were however always back at a designated place or the coach on or before the alotted time which made for smooth running of the coach tour. NZ Nurse
